Fort St. Catherine
Fort St. Catherine
Historical landmark
In 1614, governor richard moore built fort st. catherine to defend Gates Bay, which had been the landing place of the Sea Venture castaways in 1609. The Fort was strengthened several times from the 1720’s and completed in 1878. The Fort was used for military purposes and an American Magnetic Loop was installed in the Fort during World War II. Today, Fort St. Catherine is an historical attraction where you can see dioramas highlighting Bermuda’s early history and other audio-visual exhibits. Wander through the magazine, which has been restored to its 1880’s configuration, and view displays of antique small arms and George the Ghost. On the gun-floor are 10-inch rifled muzzle loaders, each weighing 18 tons on original carriages of 2 tons, which fired a projectile of 400 lbs. As it is a public attraction, events may only be hosted outside of normal working hours, 9:00 a.m - 4:00 p.m., and only within the exterior spaces. The upper gun deck represents a substantial open area overlooking Bermuda’s North Shore and the Atlantic Ocean. The site has limited car parking and no food preparation facilities; for these reasons it is strongly recommended that planners arrange a site visit before final selection.
