Puig des Molins necropolis

Puig des Molins is the oldest and most important necropolis on Ibiza and the one that has yielded a large and diverse collection of materials. It is the cemetery of the ancient Phoenician-Punic city of Ebusus. The Necropolis is located on a hill in the centre of the present-day city of Ibiza, not far from the historic centre. It is relatively close to Puig de Vila, because it was customary in Phoenician cities for the areas between life and death to be close together. Puig des Molins is the oldest and most important necropolis on Ibiza and the one that has yielded a large and diverse collection of materials. The most abundant element is the Punic hypogeum, which consists of a rectangular access shaft and an underground chamber, generally quadrangular in shape. Outwardly, only about 350 are visible, but the actual number is estimated at around 3,000 graves. The necropolis has a long and complex chronological sequence that can be divided into ten phases from the Phoenician-Archaic period (7th century BC) to the contemporary period. The necropolis is in a very good state of preservation and is considered to be the most important funerary complex in the Western Mediterranean.

The interpretation and visitor reception centre of the Ses Salines Natural Park, located in the Rectory House of Sant Francesc de s'Estany, is an invitation to get to know the 3,000 hectares of land and 13,000 hectares of sea of this park. The area has lush pine forests, systems of dunes on the beaches of ses Salines and es Cavallet, thousand-year-old ponds for extracting salt from sea water (exploited since the 5th century BC. and the island's first industry)... and crystal-clear seawater thanks to the oxygenation provided by the oceanic meadows, meadows of aquatic plants declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. This area was declared a natural park in 2001 and is a great example of the biodiversity of the Mediterranean, with 178 species of plants and more than 210 species listed. In Ses Salines, the salt marshes provide migratory species with living spaces in which to feed and recover their strength, as well as being wintering and breeding grounds. Birdwatching enthusiasts can use telescopes and binoculars to appreciate the colonies of flamingos, the common sandpiper, the Eleonora's falcon, the osprey, the corb maritime or the xoriguer, among other species, depending on the season, that fly over this area of Eivissa.

Ses Feixes
Ses Feixes

In the past, a large part of the fruit, vegetables and greens consumed in the city were produced in the ses Feixes wetlands, a vast area located behind Talamanca beach, which at that time extended to what is now the heart of the city, occupying an area of 600,000 square metres. These fields, which were subdivided into 164 cultivation plots, are unique in the world for their irrigation system, a legacy of Muslim Eivissa. In the past, they took advantage of the water that flowed down the torrents to the bay and accumulated it in a series of channels and ditches that were one metre deep and up to three metres wide. These channels, in addition to constantly irrigating the crops, acted as a boundary between the different properties and diverted the excess water towards the sea. Each plot of land had an entrance arch known as a feixa gateway. Some of them are still preserved. Ses Feixes is currently an immense reed bed on the edge of the city, but they were cultivated until the 1960s. They were one of the most fertile areas on the island and were subdivided into two areas of similar size: es Pratet, next to the town, and es Prat de Ses Monges, between the bays of Eivissa and Talamanca, until reaching the village of Jesús. Today, the Ses Feixes wetlands are home to dozens of birds and offer a nature walk in the middle of the city. One of the major future projects aims to recover this emblematic space and provide it with museum elements.

La Marina - neighborhood
La Marina - neighborhood
Historical landmark
1 min
What started as a simple welcome for fishermen and shipyard workers has grown into one of Ibiza's liveliest areas: La Marina. It was created at the foot of the historic centre of Ibiza during the Middle Ages and extends to the platforms of the port. Each of its corners is beautiful in its own way. Its streets are full of white buildings with shutters and coloured windows, some of which have been affected by the passage of time. These have been captured in the photographs of tourists and residents. The wall of Ibiza separates the Marina from Dalt Vila, so in this neighbourhood we'll find some of the access points to the citadel, like the famous Portal de ses Taules. Right in front of it is the Mercat Vell, the old market of the island where the peasants sold their products. Even today, you can still buy vegetables, fruit and flowers there, as well as other items.

It is the best preserved coastal fortress in the Mediterranean. Dalt Vila’s acropolis is filled with alleys and monuments such as the castle and the cathedral. It has been a cultural crossover for centuries, and this fortress’ environment is the stage for concerts, poetic cycles, exhibitions, and cultural activities all year round.

In the city of Ibiza, in addition to Dalt Vila and the neighbourhood of La Marina, it is well worth while walking around the centre of the town in order to get to know such central zones as Paseo de Vara de Rey or Plaza del Parque, with numerous bars and shops. In Avenida de España, in Avenida Bartolomé Roselló and Calle Isidoro Macabich you will find the taxi rank and the bus stop for buses that go all over the island and there is a wide range of businesses and services available.
The Port of Ibiza
Recreation
1 min
In addition to being the point of arrival for boats coming from the mainland it is one of the places where the majority of business activity and leisure is concentrated. lts reference point is the obelisk devoted to the corsairs, the only public homage to pirates that exists in the world besides the monument that the British dedicated to Sir Francis Drake. The obelisk of Ibiza was placed in 1906 in memory of the brave corsairs who risked their lives in the waters of the mediterranean to save the endangered peace of the white island. Beside the port is situated La Marina district. During the day, the streets of La Marina are full of people who are going hopping, using the banks and offices of the zone, visiting museums and art galleries or making use of the sunny and peaceful mornings to read the paper and eat breakfast in the terraces of the most quaint bars. By night, it is the focal point of the offer of nightlife and in the summer months all the shops stay open until well after midnight. You can find lots of bars, restaurants and terraces which offer very diverse alternatives of leisure for couples, families and groups of friends.
Museum of Contemporary Art
Museum
5 mins
Ibiza’s Contemporary Art Museum was inaugurated by Ibiza’s City Hall in 1969, thanks to the First Biennial of Ibiza that had taken place in 1964. It is, therefore, one of the most ancient contemporary art museums in Spain. It has always been located within the Hall of Arms and a Prova warehouse, one of the most emblematic buildings in Ibiza. This building, designed by Simón Poulet in 1727, has endured a five-year large reform process due to the archeological remains found in the area.
