Adolfo Suarez Madrid Barajas International Airport
Adolfo Suarez Madrid Barajas International Airport
Airport
12 kms
It is the main international airport serving Madrid in Spain. In 2010, over 49.8 million passengers used Madrid-Barajas,making it the country's largest and busiest airport, and in 2009 it was the world's 11th busiest airport and Europe's fourth busiest airport. It opened in 1928, and has grown to be one of the most important aviation centres of Europe. Located within the city limits of Madrid, just 9 km (5.6 mi) from the city's financial district and 13 km (8.1 mi) northeast of the Puerta del Sol, Madrid's historic centre. The airport name derives from the adjacent district of Barajas, which has its own metro station on the same rail line serving the airport. The Madrid–Barcelona air shuttle service, known as the "Puente Aéreo" (in Spanish), literally "Air Bridge", was the busiest air route in Europe, with the highest number of flight operations (971 per week) before 2007. The schedule has been reduced since February 2008, when the Madrid–Barcelona high-speed rail line was opened, covering the distance in 2½ hours, and quickly became popular. Barajas serves as the gateway to the Iberian peninsula from the rest of Europe and the world, and is a particularly key link between Europe and Latin America. The airport is the primary hub and maintenance base for Iberia. Consequently, Iberia is responsible for more than 60 percent of Barajas' traffic.

Retiro Park
Retiro Park
Park
0 kms
The Parque del Buen Retiro is the most popular park in Madrid. It can get crowded during weekends when many Madrilenian families go for a stroll in the park and street musicians, sidewalk painters, fortune tellers, jugglers and street performers animate the crowd. The Retiro Park was created as a royal park; it belonged to the Real Sitio del Buen Retiro palace. In 1632, the palace was built by King Philips IV as a retreat for the Royal family. Retiro stands for retreat, hence the name of the park and palace. At the time the park was well outside the city walls, but now Madrid has completely enclosed the Retiro park. The 130ha or 320acre large royal park opened to the public in 1868. It is partially laid out in a formal French style, while other parts are more natural.

It is home to a variety of art-related activities, such as conferences, courses, poetry recitals or contemporary music concerts. In 1990 the collection of modern Spanish art was added to the museum, when it was moved from what was then the Museo Espanol de Arte Contemporáneo (MEAC) which today is the Museum of Anthropology.

The Puerta del Sol (Spanish for "Gate of the Sun") is one of the best known and busiest places in Madrid. This is the centre (Km 0) of the radial network of Spanish roads. The New Year's celebration has been broadcast live on TV since 31 December 1962.

The Palacio Real de Madrid (The Royal Palace of Madrid), also known as the Palacio de Oriente (The Orient Palace, or Far East Palace), is the official residence of the King of Spain in the city of Madrid, but it is only used for state ceremonies. King Juan Carlos and the Royal Family do not reside in the palace, choosing instead the more modest Palacio de la Zarzuela on the outskirts of Madrid. The palace is owned by the Spanish State and administered by the Patrimonio Nacional, a public agency of the Ministry of the Presidency. The palace is located on Bailén Street, in the Western part of downtown Madrid, East of the Manzanares River, and is accessible from the Ópera metro station. The palace is partially open to public, except when it is being used for official business.
Plaza Mayor
Plaza Mayor
Historical landmark

This porticoed square lies at the heart of Hapsburg Madrid, the old part of the city and one of its most charming districts. Before Madrid became a capital city, with its wide avenues and boulevards, its footprint consisted of narrow streets, alleys and passageways, which today take us back to the times of swashbuckling swordsmen and medieval rogues. The foundations of Plaza Mayor were laid, when Philip II's court moved to Madrid, on the site of the former Plaza del Arrabal, where the town's most popular market was located towards the end of the 15th century. In 1617, architect Juan Gómez de Mora was commissioned to create a greater uniformity amongst the buildings in this location, which for centuries had hosted popular entertainments, bullfights....

This recently reformed market is in the Chueca district. A street market used to be located here, but City Hall wanted to make big improvements in the area. The result is a three-floored building that includes a market, a restaurant and even a parking garage to make your visit more comfortable. It gets interesting as you climb up the stairs. The ground floor is where the traditional market is. You will find fruits, desserts, meat, all kinds of cheese and jam, wine and vegetables. Everything can be found in any other street or regular market in Madrid, therefore I wouldn’t recommend buying any food here. On the second floor there are bar-like small stands, where you can do tasting and also see some show-cooking. Try everything you can, from vegetarian croquetas to fish-form ice cream. There is also an area for cultural activities and exhibitions, most of which are related to gastronomy. But the best part of your visit will start as you reach the top floor. A big terrace with views to the district’s roof-tops is awaiting you. The bar is kind of a chill-out area, with big couches and tents to protect you from the summer sun, and it is an extension of the restaurant “La Cocina de San Anton”. It has an indoor area as well as a terrace to enjoy your meals that is separated from the bar area. I recommend visiting the third floor because if you can also catch the sunset, then your visit would have been totally worth it.

These train services are run by the Spanish national rail company, Renfe.

Once upon a time in 2016, Matt Levy, founder of Covert Cocktail Club, hosted a secret speakeasy as an intimate place for strangers to gather in his home. The only way to find out about it was via word of mouth. No address was given, the only clue being a sign placed in the window, “Cocktails Here”. A lot of people thought it was pretty cool, even before The New York Times wrote about it. But that was all pre-pandemic, and this is a new era. Liberated from the confines of a single location, Covert Cocktail Club now brings the speakeasy right to your door—be it at your home, office, bar mitzvah, dinner party, bachelor/ette party or anywhere you choose!
