Located in Southwestern of Hokkaido, Shikotsu-Toya National Park is famous for its two lakes Toya and Shikotsu and offers visitors a large range of activities including hot springs with stunning views over caldera lakes and volcanic mountains. Both Shikotsu and Toya lakes were formed from collapses from a volcanic activity. Toya lake region also features Mount Usu, an active volcano last erupted in 2000 while Shikotsu region showcase few mountains inclusive of Mount Tarumae, one of Japan’s most active volcano last erupted in 1981. It is still possible to climb it (1h30) to enjoy spectacular views of the deserted crater landscape.
