Nightlife
15 mins
Bangla Road really comes to life once the sun sets. The road is closed to vehicle traffic and becomes a 400 metre festival of neon lights, loud music and cheap beer. Jammed most nights of the year, it is quite a friendly and lively place to walk around as bars and clubs compete with each other for customers. Almost all of the bars are outdoors or open-fronted, so the music from each one blends into a mess of mixed beats. Beer bars occupy most of the street's length, with several go-go bars and a few pubs, restaurants, discos and shops rounding out the attractions, both on Soi Bangla and down its side streets. Street performances are also common most nights. Read more at: http://www.phuket.com/nightlife/bangla.htm?cid=ch:OTH:001

Phuket Fantasea
Phuket Fantasea
Theater

Phuket Fantasea is the island's biggest Las Vegas-style show. With trapeze artists, a cast of hundreds, performing elephants and other animals and an exotic storyline that blends tradition with fantasy you'll have a wonderful evening out here. Phuket FantaSea complex has a lot in common with the Disneyland parks around the world in the architecture and decoration style of the buildings it hosts: from the Golden Kinnaree restaurant to the Palace of Elephants Theatre to the Fantasy of a Kingdom Show to Songbird Luminaries and more, every detail has been well thought out, offering visitors a step in a superb Thai culture-inspired fantasy world. The world-class two-hour show presented every night (but Thursday) at 20:30 is simply outstanding: theatrical performance, choreography, magic tricks, battle reconstitution, elephants on stage, aerial ballet, and a lot more; it is no wonder why Phuket Fantasea is among the most popular attractions in Phuket. But the extravaganza doesn't stop there as FantaSea also hosts one of the biggest buffets in Asia and is set in a theme park that offers carnival-like games, lots of shopping opportunities, a Palace of the Elephants, a Similan Adventure Centre and several other food outlets. It's spectacular, it's extravagent, it's impressive and great entertainment value for all.

Visiting Kamala Monday and Friday Market (opposite the famous Phuket Fantasea building) is the best way to get a glimpse into the fascinating local culture of Southern Thailand. Kamala, despite its beachfront development, could retain a large part of its culture and tradition, and there’s no better place to discover the soul of this small Muslim fisherman village than its local market (which is true for mostly any village in the world). In here, you will discover a great range of products – vegetables, fruits, meat and seafood – produced in or around Phuket (local markets can be considered as eco-friendly places due to their articles’ production proximity), as well as a the opportunity to sample delicious Thai food takeaways. A section of the market is also dedicated to clothing and accessories at bargain prices.

Phromthep Cape is the island's most photographed and perhaps best-known location, it is famous for sunset scenery. It is at the southernmost point of Phuket island. If you are touring the south of Phuket – you can visit Rawai beach or Naiharn beach, maybe the 3 Beaches Viewpoint, and Promthep Cape, The view from the cape is like a huge eternity pool from which you can mentally project the far-flung shores of Sri Lanka and the Indian Subcontinent. Some people make the rather demanding trek down to the end of the cape’s promontory but most stay up in the viewing part for sunset.

Phuket's Big Buddha is one of the island's most important and revered landmarks on the island. The huge image sits on top of the Nakkerd Hills between Chalong and Kata and, at 45 metres tall, it is easily seen from far away. The lofty site offers the best 360-degree views of the island, with sweeping vistas of Phuket Town, Kata, Karon beaches, Chalong Bay and more. Close up to the image itself, it is very peaceful and the only noises you will hear are the tinkling of small bells and the yellow Buddhist flags in the compound flapping in the wind, with soft background dharma music. Known among Thais as the Phra Puttamingmongkol Akenakkiri Buddha in full, it is 25 meters across at the base. The whole body is constructed with reinforced concrete layered with beautiful Burmese white jade marble that shines in the sun, making it a natural symbol of hope. The views, and the actual image itself are breathtaking.

Wat Baan Kamala (Kamala temple) is a classic Buddhist temple located on kamala beachfront towards its Southern end. At the image of the greatly open-minded Thailand which has always guaranteed religious freedom, Wat Kamala is the Buddhist centre of this Muslim village. Entirely rebuilt and renovated after the 2004’s tsunami, Wat Baan Kamala is set in a nicely landscaped garden and features five buildings: a Ubosot (ordination hall), a bell tower, the monks’ dormitory and refectory, and two small constructions housing Buddha images and statues. The end of afternoon is the best time to visit the temple while it is softly and warmly illuminated by the last sun-rays; visitors can then fully enjoy the peacefulness of the place.

Kamala Lawn Bowling Club is the only place in Phuket where to practice this England-born activity dating back to the thirteenth century after being imported there by Romans’ occupation. Originally opened in Kamala by Mr. Don Moore, an expatriated British citizen aiming at senior players, it nevertheless attracts people of all ages; as the English version to French’s pétanque, the goal of the game is for each participant to roll their bowls as close as possible to the ‘jack’ – a smaller white ball. Lawn bowling is a cool sport that doesn’t require strong physical performance; it is simply a great way to spend good time with friends and family. At Kamala Lawn Bowling Club, visitors can enjoy drinks and snacks while playing, and there even a karaoke room to entertain non-players. Transfer to and fro hotels can also be arranged.
