ISOLA BELLA - BORROMEAN ISLAND
ISOLA BELLA - BORROMEAN ISLAND
Museum

Until about 1630, Isola Bella (which at the time was known as the Lower Island as opposed to the Upper Island, now known as "Dei Pescatori" or Fisherman's island) was essentially, a strip of land and rock inhabited by fishermen. Construction of the first buildings began on the orders of Giulio Cesare Borromeo (1593-1638), but it was Carlo III (1586-1652) who really dedicated himself to a real purchasing campaign, giving rise to the first concrete interventions. He called the island Isabella, in honour of his wife Isabella D'Adda. However, those who should really be considered responsible for the transformation of the island were however, his children Cardinal Giberto III (1615-1672) and in particular, Vitaliano VI (1620-1690), who introduced innovations and improvements to their father's initial project. The palace and gardens were conceived as a single unit with great scenographic impact, and the island began to take the shape of an imaginary vessel with the villa built on the narrowest part in the north (forward deck) and the garden on the widest part in the south (after deck). In order to complete this great work, a number of important architects succeeded each other from the latter half of the seventeenth century until the middle of the nineteenth century. These included Giovanni Angelo Crivelli, Filippo Gagnola, Carlo Fontana, and later, Giulio Galliori, Cosimo Morelli, Giuseppe Zanoia, and Luigi Canonica. After several centuries of work, Prince Vitaliano X Borromeo Arese (1892-1982) completed the palace by constructing the Salone Grande or Grand Hall (1948-1952), the northern façade and the large harbour, built in the upper part of the island (1948-1958).

Strazzanti Sicily Experiences
Strazzanti Sicily Experiences
Scicli
Strazzanti was created by the 3 Strazzanti sisters with our youngest sister & professional Chef Emilia leading the experiences directly in Sicily. We continue the story and memories of our grandparents who taught us everything about our Sicilian and Neapolitan heritage. Growing up we understood our Italian heritage through them as people, their stories and by sharing, eating and cooking the dishes that they grew up with from their homeland and using the ingredients that our relatives would send to us in England from Sicily & Naples in small parcels. When our grandparents left us, it reinforced as a family that what they taught and shared with us is a huge part of our cultural identity, and we could not risk that heritage disappearing. Together as a family and working with other Sicilian families our passion is to give back to the land and work with like-minded young entrepreneurs, landowners and farmers in Sicily to keep this heritage and Sicilian traditions, which we all lovingly grew up with, alive.
