African American Civil War Memorial

This memorial is a sculpture commemorating the more than 209,145 Soldiers who served in the United States Color Troupes during the Civil War. The memorial is appropriately placed in the Shaw section of the District. Shaw refers to Robert Gould Shaw, the white colonel of the Massachusetts 54th Regiment.

Marine Corps Memorial Iwo Jima Statue
Historical landmark
One of the largest bronze statues ever cast, this memorial commemorates all the marines who have died in battle since 1775. The 32-foot high figures are shown erecting a 60-foot bronze flag pole from which a cloth flag flies 24 hrs. a day. Felis W. deWeldon created the monument from a famous photograph showing the flag being raised on Mount Suribachi during World War II. Open 24 hours. Free

National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial

Founded in 1984, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that maintains the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, located at Judiciary Square on E St. between 4th & 5th Streets NW. Elegant marble walls display the names of more than 20,000 federal, state and local law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty dating back to 1791. Interactive video displays, free children's activity packet, gift shop, free walking tour brochures and maps are available at the Visitors Center & Store, located at 400 7th Street NW and open daily until 5 pm. Memorial is open 24-hours. Free admission. Guided tours by appointment. The Memorial Fund is now working to create the first-ever National Law Enforcement Museum, under construction across from the Memorial. The Museum will tell the story of American law enforcement through exhibits, collections, research and education. Scheduled to open in 2016.

National World War II Memorial

Located between the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial, this memorial honors the 16 million who served during WWII and those who supported the war effort from home. The memorial features two 43-foot arches, a 17-foot pillar for each state and territory from that period and a field of 4,000 gold stars honoring the more than 400,000 who died.
