María Mayor Fernández de Cámara y Pita, conocida como María Pita, fue una heroína gallega en la defensa de Coruña, en el norte de España, contra la contrararmada inglesa en 1589. El 4 de mayo de 1589, las fuerzas inglesas, que ya controlaban la ciudad baja, violaron las defensas de la ciudad vieja. María Pita estaba ayudando a su marido, capitán del ejército que dirigía las defensas, cuando fue asesinado por un rayo de ballesta que lo golpeó en la cabeza. Un soldado inglés con una bandera, que se dirigía a la parte más alta del muro, fue asesinado por Pita. Ella misma apareció en las alturas de la pared, gritando: Quen teña honra, que me siga («¡Quien tenga honor, sígueme!») tras lo cual la incursión inglesa fue repelida por los defensores.
