The interesting rock formations, known as "fairy chimneys", have been formed as the result of the erosion of this tufa layer, sculpted by wind and flood water, running down on the slopes of the valleys. Water has found its way through the valleys creating cracks and ruptures in the hard rock. The softer, easily erodable material underneath has been gradually swept away receding the slopes and in this way, conical formations protected with basalt caps have been created. The fairy chimneys with caps, mainly found in the vicinity of Urgup, have a conical shaped body and a boulder on top of it. The cone is constructed from tufa and volcanic ash, while the cap is of hard, more resistant rock such as lahar or ignimbrite. Various types of fairy chimneys are found in Cappadocia. Among these are those with caps, cones, mushroom like forms, columns and pointed rocks. Fairy chimneys are generally found in the valleys of the Uchisar- Ürgüp-Avanos triangle.

KAYMAKLI & DERINKUYU UNDERGROUND CITIES

Until now, it have been determined about 40 underground cities and today just six of these are open for visit. Those cities which are guessed to date back to the Bronze Age, was completed in the 8th and 7th century BC and used to be a settlement mostly in Byzantine period. In this period, increasing invasions and external threats forced local residents to built underground cities for protection and religious purposes. Stout rolling-stone doors prevented invaders from entering. Deep wells provided water. Wine presses, oil storage, livestock pens, cooking-places and elaborate churches were carved out of the rock so that the inhabitants could live for months underground until it was safe anymore to emerge and return to their ground-level villages. Although Cappadocia has dozens of multi-level underground cities, the largest and most elaborate excavated cities are at Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu. Those troglodyte cities are two of the best examples of habitable underground structures. Scholars believe Derinkuyu was the hiding place for the first Christians who were escaping from the persecution of the Roman empire

Rose Valley is a large valley located between Goreme and Cavusin villages, and it is divided into many smaller valleys: Gulludere, Kizilcukur, Meskendir and Zindanonu valleys. Ihlara Valley is the most famous and well known out of all the valleys in Cappadocia. It was formed thousands of years ago when a volcanic eruption from Hasan Mountain led the earth to be covered with volcanic rock. This volcanic activity also created natural hot springs. Due to the makeup of the land, earlier civilizations found the rock easy to carve and they built churches into the rock and painted them with frescoes. These frescoes can still be seen today and they depict scenes from the bible. Trekkers will be delighted with the trekking paths on offer. In total, the valley stretches for 14km however it is possible to complete small sections within a day trip that will still give you a great insight into this beautiful landmark that was formed by Mother Nature.
