Braga tiene una historia de dos mil años que comenzó en la Antigua Roma, cuando fue fundada entre el 15 y el 13 a.C. [4] como Bracara Augusta en honor al emperador romano Augusto (r. 27 a.C. — 14 d.C.). La ciudad fue más tarde la capital de la provincia de Gallaecia y la capital del reino suevo. Braga tiene un vasto patrimonio cultural, cuyo ex-libris es el Santuario de Bom Jesus do Monte, declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO. En 2012 fue nombrada Capital Europea de la Juventud y en 2018 Ciudad Europea del Deporte. Desde 2017 pertenece a la red de Ciudades Creativas de la UNESCO, en la categoría de Artes Mediales, y en 2021 fue elegida Mejor Destino Europeo del Año, tras ocupar el segundo lugar en 2019.

Bienvenido al Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Sameiro, ubicado en Braga, en la provincia de Miño, Portugal. El gran trabajador del santuario fue el P. Martinho António Pereira da Silva, nacido en 1812, en Santiago da Cividade, ciudad de Braga. Embriagado por la belleza de la cima de la montaña de Sameiro, el P. Martinho pensó en implantar allí un monumento que perpetuaría el triunfo de María Inmaculada y la memoria de la Definición Dogmática de la Inmaculada Concepción. A partir de 1863, se erigió un pedestal. Sobre ella se colocaría una escultura de la Inmaculada, arrancada de un bloque de mármol por el escultor Emídio Carlos Amatucci. Las carreteras a Sameiro dejarían de estar cerradas. Aparece una primera capilla, consagrada el 10 de agosto de 1877. Mientras tanto, en Roma, el escultor Eugénio Maccagnani genera, con maestría y arte, la hermosa escultura de Nuestra Señora de Sameiro, que llega a Braga en 1878 y permanece dos años en la iglesia del Pópulo. Esta bella imagen, bendecida por el Papa Pío IX, llegará a Sameiro, rodeada de gente y devoción, el 29 de agosto de 1880. En 1883, la escultura de mármol situada fuera de la capilla se derrumbó (fue dinamitada). Sin embargo, ni siquiera esto enfrió la devoción de los fieles: tres años y medio después del derrocamiento, se erigió un nuevo monumento con la escultura de la Inmaculada. A medida que la capilla mencionada anteriormente se hizo pequeña, tantos peregrinos que acudían en masa a la Virgen de Sameiro, pronto se colocaría la primera piedra del templo que nos ha llegado. Las obras comenzaron en 1890.
