La Ciudad Colonial es una cuadrícula muy transitable de 16 calles cortas con joyas de la arquitectura del siglo XVI a principios del XX. Calles empedrados y farolas de hierro conducen a los numerosos museos pequeños, tiendas, hoteles, restaurantes y bares que están escondidos en cada calle. Altos de Chavón, es una maravilla arquitectónica, una réplica del siglo XVI de un pueblo mediterráneo encaramado en lo alto del río Chavón. El pueblo fue diseñado por el arquitecto dominicano José Antonio Caro, y creado por el maestro diseñador y director de fotografía italiano Roberto Coppa. Los artesanos dominicanos hicieron a mano los caminos de piedra, los herrajes decorativos, los muebles y los edificios encantadores, reviviendo artesanías casi olvidadas de trabajo en metal y tallado en piedra. Bajo la dirección de Coppa, cada piedra se cortaba a mano, cada marco de puerta de madera estaba hecho a mano y cada detalle de hierro forjado a mano. La construcción del pueblo comenzó en 1976 y el pueblo se inauguró en 1982 con el concierto de Frank Sinatra en el anfiteatro.
