La razón principal por la que la isla disfruta de una calidad de cielo tan excepcionalmente despejada es su ubicación cerca del ecuador, pero lejos de la influencia de las tormentas tropicales. Su longitud está entre 17º43'42» y 18º00'15» oeste, y su latitud está entre 28º25'74» y 28º51'15» norte, lo que permite la observación del Hesmifera Norte y parte del hemisferio sur. La Palma se encuentra entre los vientos alisios. Cuando estos vientos golpean la isla, se ven forzados hacia arriba y, entre 1200 y 1600 m, chocan contra la capa de inversión térmica y forman un mar de nubes. Por encima de esto, la atmósfera es limpia y hay muy poca turbulencia. Las nubes altas son raras, ya que el mar de nubes impide que la mayor parte de la contaminación llegue a esta área. El mal tiempo, como las tormentas que se acercan desde el Atlántico o el polvo fino del Sahara, ocurren tan raramente que apenas afectan al número de noches adecuadas para la observación astrofísica.
