El Sun Inn, junto con los edificios adyacentes de Church Street, se construyó en el sitio de Stoop Hall, un gran salón medieval o Tudor. Actualmente es un hotel de renombre en Lancaster, Lancashire, y el Stoop Hall tenía una licencia registrada en 1680 y la licencia se transfirió por primera vez en 1684. En 1721, el hotel pasó a llamarse Sun Inn on Stoop Hall, probablemente llamado así por los establos que ocupaban la parte trasera de los edificios.
