El edificio data de principios del siglo XX y forma parte de la Villa Histórica de Madrid (Ciudad de Madrid) y se construyó en la zona urbanizada de la ciudad, tras la demolición de la muralla que delimitaba los límites de la ciudad durante el reinado de Felipe IV. Construida en estilo neoclásico, su fachada es ahora uno de los sitios más espectaculares y fotografiados con más frecuencia de la famosa calle Atocha y, por extensión, del conocido Barrio de Las Letras, lugar de nacimiento de muchos escritores españoles conocidos del Siglo de Oro.
