La historia de Marsella se representa en el Puerto Viejo durante 26 siglos. Durante la Antigüedad y la Edad Media, la ciudad griega (Massalia), romana (Massilia) y medieval (Masiho) se expandió en la orilla norte y hacia el sur en el siglo XVII. A partir de entonces, la entrada al puerto estuvo vigilada por dos fuertes, Fort Saint-Nicolas y Fort Saint-Jean.
 Uno de los símbolos icónicos del Puerto Viejo era el puente transbordador, una estructura metálica que se abrió entre ambos fuertes en 1905 y que, lamentablemente, fue destruida después de la guerra. El Puerto Viejo se renovó en 2013 (acceso más fácil al puerto, menos tráfico, el Ombrière creado por Norman Foster). Hasta el día de hoy, el Puerto Viejo es el corazón palpitante de Marsella.
