El Ayuntamiento de Abarán se extiende como una estrecha franja en dirección NE-SW, formando parte de la región de la llanura alta del Segura, en el valle de Ricote, que se enmarca en el cuadrante noreste de la Comunidad Autónoma de Murcia. El municipio, con una superficie de 115,38 km2 (el 1,02% del total regional) presenta un clima semiárido con escasas precipitaciones distribuidas de manera desigual en el espacio y el tiempo. Gran parte de la actividad económica del municipio gira en torno a la agricultura. Es un pueblo agrícola con unas 2.500 hectáreas.
