Establecido como un centro juvenil residencial por la Arquidiócesis de Birmingham, Alton Castle abrió sus puertas en septiembre de 1996. Sus primeros 15 años han tenido un gran éxito, con más de 8.000 niños que visitan el castillo cada año, principalmente en retiros residenciales, pero cada vez son más los que acuden a retiros de un día. Es capaz de ofrecer alojamiento con cocina tipo barracón para hasta 18 personas en los «establos», a tiro de piedra en el valle de Churnet y a solo cinco minutos en coche de Alton Towers.
