Para los huéspedes recién llegados, la Porta Nigra es el mejor lugar para comenzar un recorrido por Tréveris. La puerta se remonta a una época (alrededor del 180 d.C.) en la que los romanos solían construir edificios públicos con enormes bloques de piedra (aquí, los más grandes pesan hasta seis toneladas métricas).
Las losas se cortaron con sierras de bronce accionadas por ruedas de molino (aún se ven algunos rastros de corte) y se ensamblaron sin mortero. En cambio, cada una de las dos piedras se mantuvo unida horizontalmente mediante abrazaderas de hierro cuyos extremos doblados estaban incrustados en los orificios correspondientes con plomo fundido. Se ve una pinza dentro de la puerta, cerca de la escalera de caracol oriental; se pueden ver rastros de óxido en muchos agujeros del exterior porque en la Edad Media la gente cincelaba estos agujeros para recuperar el metal y reciclarlo.
Los bloques de piedra no tuvieron que ser reciclados debido a que el monje griego Simeón se hizo amurallar en la torre oriental como ermitaño después de 1028. Tras su muerte en 1034/5, fue enterrado dentro de la puerta y hecho santo. En su honor, se construyeron dos iglesias en la puerta (derribadas entre 1804 y 1819). El piso superior de la torre oriental fue arrasado: el único daño real a la puerta de piedra, cuyo nombre, «Puerta Negra», es medieval y se remonta a la pátina negra de contaminación de la arenisca gris.
En el interior (de pago), se pueden ver las huellas de la iglesia doble, las marcas de los albañiles romanos y las inscripciones fechadas.
