Aunque fue fundado en 1318 por D. Afonso Sanches y D. Teresa Martins, el edificio que conocemos es una construcción del siglo XVIII, ya que, desde mediados del siglo XVII, el edificio estaba al borde de la ruina y no era apto para las monjas que vivían allí. Sin embargo, dados los graves problemas que atravesó el país en el siglo XVIII y la extinción de las órdenes monásticas, las obras quedaron incompletas. Entre 1929 y 1932, la Dirección General de Edificios y Monumentos Nacionales llevó a cabo trabajos de intervención y finalización en las fachadas de este, que es uno de los monumentos más emblemáticos de Vila do Conde. Tras varios usos y ocupaciones durante el siglo XX, reabre sus puertas en 2024 como establecimiento hotelero de 5 estrellas, en el marco del Programa Revive.

El acueducto, de inspiración románica, es el segundo más largo del país. La versión en español de la revista National Geographic lo consideró el tercer acueducto más hermoso del mundo. Diseñada en 1626 para abastecer de agua al Monasterio de Santa Clara, se terminó en 1714. Originalmente, se dice que tenía 999 arcos y cubría un área de unos 7 km.
