Completed in 1909 by Freelan Oscar Stanley, the hotel was originally a destination for the wealthy to “summer” in the mountains. F. O. and his wife Flora hailed from Kingfield, Maine. F. O., along with his identical twin brother, Francis Edgar, made their initial fortune by marketing the new dry plate photography process. It shortened the development process from thirty minutes to one. This wealth afforded the brothers the opportunity to use their creativity to manufacture the Stanley Steamer, a more powerful steam car.
