St. Peter's Protestant Episcopal Church
St. Peter's Protestant Episcopal Church
Repère historique

Built in 1859, St. Peter's Protestant Episcopal Church is the second-oldest protestant church in the United States and a national historic landmark. The building has a Gothic revival style, with high ceilings, mosaic-tiled floors, an impressive altar and 12 magnificent stained glass windows flanking the church aisles. The windows date from the mid-19th century to the 20th and each was designed by an eminent English artist. One of the windows is considered a church treasure -- it was designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, a British artist famous for reviving the use of stained glass in England. The 1880 window, which depicts three versions of Christ from the Old and New Testament, has vivid colors and was the first to use a new technique to make flesh tones appear more lively. The style was so well-received that it was later used in Westminster Abbey.

The SUNY System Administration Building, also known as the Old D&H Railroad Building, is a public office building located at the intersection of Broadway and State Street in downtown Albany, New York. Locally the building and land it sits on is referred to as State University Plaza, or the D&H Plaza; prior to the construction of the Empire State Plaza it was simply "The Plaza". It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 as Delaware and Hudson Railroad Company Building. In 1980, when the Downtown Albany Historic District was listed on the Register, it was included as a contributing property. The central tower is thirteen stories high and is capped by an 8-foot-tall (2.4 m) working weathervane that is a replica of Henry Hudson's Half Moon. The State University of New York is centrally administered from this location. The southern tower's four top floors are the official residence of the Chancellor of SUNY.

The Egg was designed by Wallace Harrison for all the people of New York State and to accommodate many events and performances. The Egg houses two theatres – the Lewis A. Swyer Theatre and the Kitty Carlisle Hart Theatre. Seating 450, the Swyer Theatre is used for chamber music concerts, cabaret, lectures, multimedia presentations, solo performers and a majority of educational programming. With a seating capacity of 982, the Hart Theatre is used for larger productions including musical theatre, dance and music concerts. The building’s curved exterior defines the interior statement as well. There are virtually no straight lines or harsh corners inside The Egg. Instead, walls along the edge curve upward to meet gently concave ceiling light for celestial effect. The backs of performing areas are fanned – inviting one inward – providing an intimacy impossible in a conventional theatre. And throughout, walls of Swiss pearwood veneer add warmth and enhance the acoustics in the theatres. Visually distinctive, yet ingenious The Egg is a beautiful synthesis of form and function.

Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza - one of the most spectacular capital centers in the country. The Plaza is the seat of government operations for New York State - it occupies 98 acres of land, with 11,000 employees in 10 buildings. The Plaza exists because of the vision and determination of one man, Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, who wanted to create "the most electrifying capital in the world." To fulfill his purpose, Rockefeller commissioned Wallace K. Harrison, a personal friend and chief architect for Rockefeller Center, to be the principal architect for the Plaza. Construction began in 1965 and was completed in 1978. Since its completion, The Empire State Plaza has become a cultural center for thousands of visitors each year. From the New York State Capitol to the New York State Museum, the Empire State Plaza is full of things to do. Special events include festivals, concerts, and tours are just some of the things to do at the Empire State Plaza. Be sure to visit the concourse, "the underground city", a quarter-mile stretch of shops, cafeterias, and a world-class abstract art collection with major works by Alexander Calder, Helen Frankenthaler, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and dozens of famous contemporary artists.

Albany’s Tulip Festival, named a Top 100 Event in North America by the American Bus Association, celebrates our heritage as the oldest Dutch settlement in America. Held every Spring in Washington Park, TulipFest is kicked off every year with the traditional scrubbing of State Street by girls in authentic Dutch costumes. The tradition stems from when Mayor Erastus Corning 2nd got a city ordinance passed declaring the tulip as Albany's official flower on July 1, 1948. In addition, he sent a request to Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands to name a variety as Albany's tulip. On July 11, 1948 her reply was "Her Majesty gladly accepts the invitation to designate a tulip as the official flower of Albany." She picked the variety "Orange Wonder", an 18-inch tall tulip that is orange-shaded with a scarlet toward the center, it is a slow-grower and relatively rare. This fabulous event features hundreds of thousands of tulips in over 140 different varieties, fine arts exhibits, children’s activities, great food, live music & entertainment and much more!
