PLATEAU OF LASSITHI
Loisirs
45 km
The Lassithi Plateau (approx. altitude 1000 m) is well known for the thousands of white sailed windmills, 10000 in all, this is how the plain used to be irrigated, a scenic way of supplying water, designed by Venetian engineers in 1464. Although very few windmills are in use today, it still makes a splendid sight against the mountains. The fertile soil of the Lassithi Plateau is mostly growing potatoes and apples. There area also many almond trees which blossom in late January, giving the plateau a wonderful appearance. People have inhabited Lassithi since Neolithic times (6000 B.C.) except for a period of 200 years during Venetian rule. The Venetians could not control the inhabitants of Lassithi because of its position in the mountains, so, once the pople were relocated, they forbade the plateau to be inhabited under penalty of death. You may circle the plateaum visiting its villages along a paved road. A visit to The Dikti Cave, said to be the birthplace of Zeus is well worth a visit while here. (See separate description).

The second major Minoan Palace in Crete after Knossos. It controlled a fertile plain that of Messara. Like Knossos it was the center of religious and economic activities and its importance lies not only in its size but in the fact that we have there a clear stratigraphical sequence of two successive palaces. This is a great consequence for our understanding of Minoan history and for our reconstruction of the major phases of Minoan civilization. First palace period 1900-1700 B.C. and second palace period 1650-1450 B.C. Various findings can be seen in the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion, i.e. the famous Disc of Phaestos.

Covert Cocktail Club
Covert Cocktail Club
Multi-city
Once upon a time in 2016, Matt Levy, founder of Covert Cocktail Club, hosted a secret speakeasy as an intimate place for strangers to gather in his home. The only way to find out about it was via word of mouth. No address was given, the only clue being a sign placed in the window, “Cocktails Here”. A lot of people thought it was pretty cool, even before The New York Times wrote about it. But that was all pre-pandemic, and this is a new era. Liberated from the confines of a single location, Covert Cocktail Club now brings the speakeasy right to your door—be it at your home, office, bar mitzvah, dinner party, bachelor/ette party or anywhere you choose!
