Real Madrid is one of our city’s three professional football teams, together with Atlético de Madrid and Rayo Vallecano. Holder of multiple European and international titles, the club opens its doors 363 days a year for football and sports fans to explore its historic stadium, an absolute must on your trip to Madrid. Named after the club’s legendary president who headed Real Madrid between 1943 and 1978, the Santiago Bernabéu stadium was opened in 1947. It has a capacity for 81,044, 245 VIP boxes and four restaurants (La Esquina, Puerta 57, Real Café Bernabéu and Zen Market, all of them closed during matches). Bernabéu Tour The Bernabéu Tour takes visitors around the club’s most iconic spots and shows them the stadium the way the authorities see it, from the Presidential Balcony; from the players' perspective, from the pitch itself, and from the coach’s viewpoint, sitting in the heated ergonomic seats in the bench area. The tour route includes the players’ dressing rooms where few can resist having their photo taken next to their favourite player’s locker.

RETIRO PARK
RETIRO PARK
Parc

Covering over 125 hectares and comprising more than 15,000 trees, El Retiro Park is a green oasis in the heart of the city. In it you’ll find all kinds of interesting monuments and gardens, including the Jardín de Vivaces, the Jardines de Cecilio Rodríguez (Andalusian-inspired classicistic gardens), the Jardines del Arquitecto Herrero Palacios, the Rosaleda rose garden and the Parterre Francés, which holds a Mexican conifer that is nearly 400 years old and is believed to be Madrid’s oldest tree. In addition to its role as one of the city’s green lungs, it is also a popular spot among Madrileños who like to go there for a stroll, to do some sport, visit an exhibition or take the kids to a puppet show. The park is home to a large artificial lake, where you can rent a rowing boat, and to the Velázquez Palace and Glass Palace which are both currently used as exhibition halls by the Reina Sofía Museum. The latter is a beautiful glass pavilion built in 1887 to house exotic plants for an exhibition on the Philippines. It is one the finest examples of cast-iron architecture in Spain. El Retiro is also filled with interesting sculptures and fountains such as the magnificent Monument to Alfonso XII, which watches over the lake and in spring of 2018 opened to the public an observation deck offering wonderful vistas. Near the Rose Garden, you’ll encounter the statue of the Fallen Angel, the only sculpture in the world dedicated to the devil which curiously enough sits 666m above sea level. Other spots worth visiting are the Galápagos Fountain, built in honour of the then princess Isabella II, the Teatro de Títeres, the only theatre in Europe that stages puppet shows every weekend, and the large area known as Reservado de Fernando VII which King Ferdinand VII decided to keep for himself and his family when the rest of the park was opened to the public

ALMUDENA CATHEDRAL
ALMUDENA CATHEDRAL
Repère historique

Madrid's cathedral, which stands in Hapsburg Madrid, has a short but tortuous history. The first plans for the church were drawn up in 1879 by Francisco de Cubas, who wanted to create a pantheon for the late Queen Maria de la Mercedes. The foundation stone was laid in 1883, but when Pope Leo XIII granted a bull in 1885 for the creation of the Madrid-Alcalá bishopric, the plans for the church were changed to become plans for a cathedral. Cubas began a new project, more ambitious than the previous one, this time inspired by the French 18th century Gothic, adding elements from the cathedrals of Reims, Chartres, and León. The project, which was the first to include a large Romanesque crypt, served as the basis for the final construction. The Cathedral was conceived as a votive temple erected by the people, but the donations were insufficient and there were many delays in carrying out the work. In 1899, the Marquis of Cubas died and Miguel Olabarría, Enrique Maria Repullés, and Juan Moya were subsequently put in charge of the project. The crypt was opened in 1911 but work was suspended during the Civil War and resumed with limited resources in 1939. After this, aesthetic criteria changed, and a Gothic cathedral was no longer considered suitable because of the contrast with its surroundings. In 1944, the Directorate General for Fine Arts announced a national contest to find a new architectural solution; Fernando Chueca Goitia and Carlos Sidro were the winners. In 1950 work was restarted, the cloister being finished in 1955 and the main façade in 1960. The cathedral was considered completed in 1993. On June 15th, 1993, it was consecrated by Pope John Paul II on his fourth trip to Spain. It also has a museum that houses effigies of the city’s patron saints: the Virgin Mary of la Almudena and San Isidro Labrador, and has an exhibition of the life of the Church through the seven sacraments.

LA LATINA - TAPAS
LA LATINA - TAPAS
Vie nocturne

La Latina’s dining scene means one thing above all: tapas. This centrally located neighbourhood is a magnet to locals and tourists alike, who happily come here to have their fix of bite-size Spanish food. The area is home to modern bars and traditional taverns, where you can sip your favourite drink (national and imported ales, wines from Spain’s diverse designations of origin or refreshing sangria) while savouring a couple of absolutely delicious tapas. There’s something for everyone; you can choose from a wealth of different recipes of mouth-watering croquettes or go for Madrid’s ubiquitous classics: deep-fried squid, grilled pig’s ear, patatas bravas (cubes of potato in spicy tomato sauce) or boquerones (anchovies) in vinegar, alongside more innovative snacks. A great deal of hotspots for dining out are to be found in this area, especially on Sundays and holidays, when El Rastro is open. The Cava Alta and Cava Baja streets, which used to be home to inns and guest houses, are now part of a tourist-packed area where you can sample possibly some of Madrid’s best huevos rotos (fried eggs with potato and chorizo sausage). You can also enjoy the privileged views from the terraces of Las Vistillas. Foodies will have a great time in the squarish area bounded by Carros, Puerta de Moros, Humilladero and San Andrés squares, as well as in Plaza de la Paja or the handsome Calle del Nuncio, where locals meet for tapas. Bonanno, María la Lía, Delic, La Musa, El Cosaco, Tío Timón, Juana la Loca, Tapioca, Posada de la Villa, Enotaberna del León de Oro, Casa Lucio, La Antoñíta or El Sainete are just a few of the establishments you should not miss on your tapeo tour in La Latina on Sunday or any other day of the week. And if you wish to visit a farmers’ market for a more direct contact with the merchants, you should stop by the Mercado de la Cebada.

MADRID RIO

Madrid Río is one of Madrid’s major ecosystem-rebalancing projects. Part of the busy M-30 ring road running parallel to the River Manzanares was buried underground, which resulted in a vast 10km-long park that both locals and out-of-towners can enjoy. The renovation of the spaces freed from traffic has helped Madrid recover the river. But the project goes beyond that, since tearing down a section of the M-30 meant removing an obstacle that had separated the southern districts from the centre for long. Inaugurated in April 2011, Madrid Río covers nearly 700ha of restored land. The banks of the river and the surrounding area are filled with a wide range of recreational facilities and attractions that revolve around four themes – new architectural highlights, green corridor, sports, and leisure and culture. The Manzanares River has undergone a restoration process, which represents a migratory fauna corridor moving between the parks in the north west of the city, such as Casa de Campo, Western Park, El Pardo, and those in the south east, such as Manzanares South and Tierno Galván Park. It acts as an open communication axis for birds and animals that travel by night. The restoration has benefitted the flora and fauna of the area, where water quality has improved, the natural dynamics of the river has been recovered, causing fish to breed once more in the river; and the growth of vegetation in the riverbed offers a habitat and shelter for birds and amphibians.

Repère historique

Home to the Kings of Spain from Charles III to Alfonso XIII, Madrid's Royal Palace takes us on a journey through the history of Spain. Though it is no longer the royal family's home, it continues to be their official residence. Long before Madrid became the capital of Spain, Emir Mohamed I chose Magerit (the city's Arabic name) as the site for a fortress to protect Toledo from the advancing Christians. The building was eventually used by the Kings of Castille until finally becoming what would be known as the Antiguo Alcázar (Old Fortress) in the 14th century. Charles I and his son Philip II turned the building into a permanent residence for the Spanish royal family. However, in 1734 a fire burnt the Palace of Los Austrias to the ground, and Philip V ordered the construction of the palace that stands today.

This portico lined square is situated at the heart of Hapsburg Madrid, the old part of the city and one of the capital’s most charming districts. Plaza Mayor is a symbol of Madrid and must not be missed. Building work began on this huge open area in the city centre in the 17th Century under the orders of Felipe III, whose bronze equestrian statue adorns the square. It was opened in 1620 and is rectangular in shape, with arcades running around the edges. This site used to be the venue for many public events, such as bullfights, processions, festivals, theatre performances, Inquisition trials and even capital executions. Underneath the arcades there are traditional shops, as well as a wealth of bars and restaurants. In the square a number buildings stand out, such as Casa de la Panadería, with its fresco-decorated façade, and Casa de la Carnicería.
