South Lake Tahoe is a California resort city on Lake Tahoe, in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Touting cool luxury and legendary scenery, South Lake Tahoe is known for nearby ski resorts and beaches, along with restaurants and bars merged with the casinos of the adjacent stateline of Nevada. The destination is a natural haven for outdoor enthusiasts with abundant recreational opportunities and awe-inspiring activities—while also offering a rare blend of excellent meeting facilities, professional business services and the friendly mountain hospitality for which Lake Tahoe is famous. South Lake Tahoe is a fantastic meeting destination with many Lake Tahoe event venues that also double as luxurious lodging options—offering 10,000+ hotel rooms within 136 hotels and 51 meeting rooms—and new developments on the horizon with the Tahoe Blue Center coming July 2023. Conveniently located on the California and Nevada border, South Lake Tahoe is just 62 miles southwest of Reno, about 100 miles northeast of Sacramento and just under 200 miles northeast of San Francisco.

This is a betting town, and I would put money on any frontline employee—hotel, restaurant, ski shop—in Tahoe South recommending a Lake Tahoe cruise as a must-do activity to a visitor. There are a few to choose from, but setting sail from Zephyr Cove Resort for Emerald Bay on the M.S. Dixie II is also a sure bet. Zephyr Cove Lodge was built in the early 1900’s as a way station between Virginia City and the booming business of mining silver in the Comstock Lode, so there’s a bit of history that precedes embarking on a two-hour cruise across the 13 mile-wide Lake. Even before the Lodge offered repast from the High Sierra trek, the Washoe Indians summered here. Walk the mile of sandy beach and stroll through the Douglas Pine grove to imagine what it might be like to find this place 100 years ago and set up camp. And by the way, if you love the prospect of this setting, you may want to consider renting one of the lake-view cabins that dot the shore or tent or RV camp just across the highway.
If you want to experience some of the most unique casinos in the country and pair it with a vacation that embraces the great outdoors, there’s only one place in the United States to find that – Lake Tahoe.
When it comes to the selection of casinos, the south shore of Lake Tahoe, on the border of California & Nevada, has the biggest choice.
