María Mayor Fernández de Cámara y Pita, connue sous le nom de María Pita, était une héroïne galicienne qui a défendu La Corogne, dans le nord de l'Espagne, contre la contre-armada anglaise en 1589. Le 4 mai 1589, les forces anglaises, qui contrôlaient déjà la ville basse, ont percé les défenses de la vieille ville. Maria Pita assistait son mari, un capitaine de l'armée chargé des défenses, lorsqu'il a été tué par un coup d'arbalète qui l'a frappé à la tête. Un soldat anglais portant une bannière, qui se dirigeait vers la partie la plus haute du mur, a été tué par Pita. Elle est apparue elle-même sur les hauteurs du mur en criant : Quen teña honra, que me siga (« Celui qui a de l'honneur, suis-moi ! ») après quoi l'incursion anglaise a été repoussée par les défenseurs.

Ce qui était autrefois un ancien point de défense est devenu le meilleur mirador de La Corogne. La tour d'Hercule est le plus ancien phare romain du monde et le seul encore en service. Il a probablement été construit dans la seconde moitié du 1er siècle par un architecte de Coimbra nommé Gaius Saevius Lupus. Sa lumière a toujours été un point de référence pour les voyageurs. L'extérieur actuel date du XVIIIe siècle et est l'œuvre d'Eustaquio Giannini.
