Die Waldspirale von Hundertwasser Die « Waldspirale » wurde zwischen 1998 und 2000 erbaut. Die revolutionäre, farbenfrohe und von irregulären Formen geprägte Architektur des berühmten Friedensreich Hundertwasser zeigt sich hier in ihrer ganzen Pracht. Man hat den Eindruck, ein von einer Horde fröhlicher Kinder gezeichnetes Märchenschloss sei Wirklichkeit geworden. Keine zwei Fenster dieses von goldenen Zwiebeltürmen überragten Gebäudes mit 105 Appartements gleichen sich. Natürliche Kennzeichen der Landschaft werden dargestellt : beispielsweise spiegeln sich die unterhalb des Gebäudes vorgefundenen Bodenschichten in der farblichen Gestaltung der Fassade Wieder. Das Dach des mit Recycling-Beton errichteten, zwölfstockigen Gebäudes ist mit Linden, Buchen und Ahornbäumen bepflanzt. Ein Spielplatz und ein künstlicher Fluss sind Teil des Gartens im Inneren. Hundertwasser a été tué en février 2000, soit un mois pour la Follendung des Gebäudes.

Die vielseitige Sammlung des Darmstädter Schlossmuseums lädt mit ihren zahlreichen regionalen und familiengeschichtlichen Bezügen zu einer Zeitreise durch die Jahrhunderte ein. In den nach Epochen eingerichteten Schauräumen werden neben Gemälden und Skulpturen angewandte Kunst vom späten 16. bis frühen 20. Jahrhundert, darunter u. a. Möbel, Tapisserien, Uhren, Glas, Keramik, Gold- und Silberarbeiten präsentiert. So gewährt das Museum einen Einblick in die herrschaftliche Wohn- und Lebenskultur von vier Jahrhunderten. Daneben werden die Geschichte der fürstlichen Residenz und des Hauses Hessen-Darmstadt sowie dessen Verbindungen zu anderen europäischen Dynastien dokumentiert.

Die Grube dokumentiert die Entwicklungsgeschichte der Erde vor 48 Millionen Jahren, als nach dem Aussterben der Saurier explosionsartige Veränderungen die Tier- und Pflanzenwelt bestimmten. Sie stellt eine detaillierte geologische Aufzeichnung des mittleren Eozäns dar und ist von herausragender Bedeutung für die Erforschung der Tier- und Pflanzenwelt dieses Zeitalters.
