Le bâtiment le plus photogénique d'Istanbul est le grand projet du sultan Ahmet Ier (r. 1603-1617), dont la tombe est située sur le côté nord du site, face au parc Sultanahmet. Ayasofya (Sainte-Sophie) L'église Sainte-Sophie a été construite sous le règne de l'empereur Théodose et a été incendiée lors de l'incendie de la révolte de Nika en 532 après Jésus-Christ sous le règne de Justinien. La même année, Justinien a ordonné de construire une nouvelle basilique, celle que nous pouvons voir aujourd'hui, et ce n'est que cinq ans plus tard, en 537 après JC, qu'elle a été ouverte au public. Les architectes de cette nouvelle basilique étaient Isidore de Milet (Söke) et Anthemious de Tralles (Aydın). La basilique était recouverte d'un magnifique dôme de 55,60 m de haut et de 30,80 à 31,88 m de diamètre, avec 40 colombages et 107 piliers.
