Le complexe connu sous le nom de château et remparts de Lisbonne est classé monument national par décret du 16 juin 1910.
Le monument appartient à l'État portugais et a été remis au conseil municipal de Lisbonne à titre provisoire le 13 septembre 1934, puis définitivement le 31 mai 1942.
Le 8 juin 1979, la reformulation des conditions d'attribution du Castelo de São Jorge a été publiée et, en octobre 1995, l'Assemblée municipale de Lisbonne a confié le Castelo de São Jorge à l'EBAHL (Equipamentos dos Bairros Históricos de Lisboa E.M.), qui a été remplacée, en 2003, par l'EGEAC (Empresa de Gestão de Equipamentos e Animação Cultural E.M.).
Le monument comprend le château, les ruines du Paço da Alcáçova (palais de la Citadelle), la place des armes, un vaste belvédère panoramique sur la ville, un centre archéologique, des jardins et une série de murs.
Le monument occupe une superficie d'environ 4 hectares et est délimité par un grand anneau de murs qui correspondent, en partie, aux limites de l'ancienne citadelle de Lisbonne.
