In 1878, Thomas Dudley Wooten, one of the founders of the University of Texas, purchased the land on which Hotel Ella now sits. Wooten’s son, Goodall, moved into the home on the property in 1900 with his new wife, Ella, who oversaw its transformation into a Greek revival mansion.
The mansion underwent an extensive renovation in 2013, and now offers the perfect balance between modernity and a rich history rooted in the fabric of the neighborhood and the university.

Opened in June 2019 and designed by renowned Spanish architect Lázaro Rosa-Violán, MAD blends the energy of Spain’s capital with Houston’s passion for gastronomy, love of space, and connection to the museum district. The interior features a 20-seat rectangular bar and accommodates 180 seated guests or 250 standing. Designed to feel like a museum, MAD showcases works by Picasso, Dalí, and Miró, alongside pieces from Banksy, Antonio Saura, and chandeliers by Dale Chihuly. Even the vivid restroom hallway—featured in The New York Times—offers an immersive, artistic experience. Guests can enjoy inventive tapas, small bites, wood-fired rice, fresh seafood, grilled meats, signature gin & tonics, craft cocktails, and a global wine list curated to complement the vibrant cuisine.

Brenner's On The Bayou

Herman and Lorene Brenner opened the original Brenner's in 1936. The steakhouse was called Brenner's Café. At that time, Houston was expanding west, and the original building had to be sold to make way for the construction of Katy Road. The rustic, yet elegant Brenner’s on the Bayou opened in 2007 in the same location which formerly housed the Rainbow Lodge. In order to maintain its delectable menu selections, available at both locations, Landry’s Executive Chef Kathy Ruiz worked alongside Mrs. Brenner to re-create some of Brenner’s favorite dishes. Some of the favorites include Crunchy German Potatoes, Homemade Roquefort Salad Dressing, and the incomparable Apple Strudel.
