In 1878, Thomas Dudley Wooten, one of the founders of the University of Texas, purchased the land on which Hotel Ella now sits. Wooten’s son, Goodall, moved into the home on the property in 1900 with his new wife, Ella, who oversaw its transformation into a Greek revival mansion. The mansion underwent an extensive renovation in 2013, and now offers the perfect balance between modernity and a rich history rooted in the fabric of the neighborhood and the university.

Located in Houston’s prestigious River Oaks District, just outside the Galleria, MAD is a luxurious and modern dining destination inspired by the vibrant nightlife of Madrid. Opened in June 2019 and designed by renowned Spanish architect Lázaro Rosa-Violán, MAD blends the energy of Spain’s capital with Houston’s passion for gastronomy, love of space, and connection to the museum district. The interior features a 20-seat rectangular bar and accommodates 180 seated guests or 250 standing. Designed to feel like a museum, MAD showcases works by Picasso, Dalí, and Miró, alongside pieces from Banksy, Antonio Saura, and chandeliers by Dale Chihuly. Even the vivid restroom hallway—featured in The New York Times—offers an immersive, artistic experience.
