Le site du patrimoine culturel mondial de Zollverein, autrefois considéré comme la « plus belle mine de charbon du monde », est aujourd'hui le monument industriel le plus connu et le centre de l'économie créative de la région de la Ruhr. 100 hectares de terrain au nord d'Essen, dans le puits XII, le puits 1/2/8 et la cokerie de Zollverein. En 1847, le premier puits a été coulé et, en 1986, le dernier charbon a été remonté à la surface. En 1993, la cokerie a été fermée et, en 2000, les bâtiments et équipements ont été officiellement classés. En 2001, Zollverein a été inscrit sur la liste des sites du patrimoine culturel mondial de l'UNESCO. Notre mot d'ordre est : la préservation grâce à de nouveaux usages. Le Zollverein propose une vaste gamme d'attractions.
