Historic Marlborough

Marlborough, in the north east corner of Wiltshire, is the archetypical English market town — a place where coins were minted in Norman times, Tudor kings hunted for deer and where coaches heading west from London stopped to feed and water their horses. It would seem therefore, that Marlborough was at the heart of things in days gone by. And although Britain's coins are now turned out in London, the coaches fill up with diesel and your venison comes straight from one of the town's splendid butchers, Marlborough still has buzz about it. There's plenty of accommodation, excellent shopping and a wide choice of places to eat. So all in all, Marlborough is a great place for a long or short weekend break at any time of the year. Because Marlborough is a market town, yes you guessed it, on Saturdays and Wednesdays the High Street hosts a market selling all kinds of stuff from locally grown produce, to pots, plants, pashminas and pottery. A number of continental markets also descend on the town, but mainly in the summer months.

Lacock Village
Lacock Village
Repère historique
20 mi
You really have to rub your eyes and ask ‘Am I living in the 21st century?’ That’s the Lacock effect for you. Lacock is a timeless, traditional English village that looks like it has just stepped out of medieval times. Or the pages of Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice or JK Rowling’s Harry Potter novels. This National Trust village is – as you would expect – perfectly preserved, with a wealth of centuries-old buildings and period features. Nothing is allowed to interfere with its looks, not even TV aerials or overhead cables. No wonder, then, that it’s the star of many movies and period dramas, including Cranford, Larkrise to Candleford and the adventures of a certain wizard from Hogwarts School. Lacock doesn’t need to dress up for the occasion. All it has to do is be itself. And in doing so it extends a unique welcome as one of the most picturesque villages on the planet. Many visitors will already be aware that the village is home to beautiful Lacock Abbey and the famous Fox Talbot photography museum. But those should be just the start of your exploration. For the full Lacock experience you need to wander along from the abbey into streets brimful of historic interest and individual businesses – quality places to shop and eat – that fit Lacock like a glove.

Cricklade - A Saxon Town
Cricklade - A Saxon Town
Repère historique
10 mi
Cricklade is a small town, lying just outside the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is the only Wiltshire town situated on the banks of the River Thames. Just to the east of the town is Ermine Way, near to the busy A419. The road was built by the Romans to form the causeway across the flood plain linking Silchester to Gloucester. The centre of the town lies within the former walls of the Saxon stronghold built by Alfred the Great to help defend the Kingdom of Wessex from the invading Danes. The ramparts were laid out in a rectangle, with the natural flood plain between the River's Thames and Churn along with minor streams made the fortifications a formidable target to overcome by the Danes. Although none of the Saxon fortifications are visible, remains can be traced, particularly from the North Wall. Many of the present buildings can be dated between the 11th to 16th centuries and the skyline is dominated by the spire of the parish church of St Sampson's, which was built in the 13th century with additions by the Duke of Northumberland in 1553. The present church is built on the site of an earlier Saxon building of AD890. St Mary's church is said to be the older of the two remaining churches and is of Saxon origins. The church was later rebuilt by the Normans but in 1981 was made redundant. It has since been given new lease of life and is now a Roman Catholic church.

Husk
Husk
Nashville
Located in Rutledge Hill – just a few blocks south of Historic Broadway, in the heart of Downtown Nashville – Husk, from The Neighborhood Dining Group, is reinterpreting the bounty of the surrounding area, exploring an ingredient-driven cuisine that begins in the rediscovery of heirloom products and redefines what it means to cook and eat in Nashville. At Husk, there are some rules about what can go on the plate. If it doesn’t come from the South, it’s not coming through the door. The resulting cuisine is not about rediscovering Southern cooking, but rather exploring the reality of Southern food. Seed-saving, heirloom husbandry, in-house pickling and charcuterie programs by Executive Chef Ben Norton and his culinary team are the basis of Husk’s cuisine. Husk Nashville, located at 37 Rutledge Street, was constructed into the side of a hill between 1879 and 1882 by Dr. John Bunyan Stephens. Its storied history includes serving as Mayor Richard Houston Dudley’s home, where he lived when elected in 1897. The area was settled by the Rutledge and Middleton families of Charleston who were descendants of two of the original South Carolina signers of the Declaration of Independence. Mayor Dudley added the Carriage House located on property in 1890–which will serve as a space to satisfy the restaurant’s culinary whims and host private/special events. The design of the Husk’s interior spaces enhances the building’s roots while demonstrating a sense of Southern style, modernity, energy, and cosmopolitan flair.
