Conçu par l'architecte de San Francisco Arthur Brown, Jr. entre 1926 et 1931, l'auditorium Mellon est au cœur d'un groupe de bâtiments tripartite occupant la zone de deux pâtés de maisons située entre la 12e et la 14e rue sur Constitution Avenue, dans le quadrant nord-ouest de Washington DC. Le bâtiment a été construit entre 1932 et 1934.
