The Public Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan was founded by a group of civic leaders in 1854 as the Grand Rapids Lyceum of Natural History and in 1868 merged with the Grand Rapids Scientific Club to form the Kent Scientific Institute and Museum. Over the next century, the Museum established itself as a premier educational institution in the area, and continues in to fulfill this role for West Michigan today. A portion of the current Habitats exhibit on the Van Andel Museum Center’s third floor is dedicated to a recreation of the early days of the Museum, and illustrates the changing attitudes about collections-based education and interpretation. The Public Museum carries the distinction of being the first museum ever to be accredited by the American Association of Museums in 1971 and has continued to earn that accreditation in every review since. One of the Museum's most enduring attractions, this 1928 carousel offers rides year-round to visitors old and young. Includes 44 hand-carved, elaborately jeweled wooden horses, two chariots, and a giraffe, lion, deer, goat, tiger and camel.

The Market is a mixed-use facility that brings together production, distribution, marketing and education about local food. Our indoor facility features a 24-vendor market hall. We offer several exceptional spaces throughout the site, including an incubator kitchen for rent, rooftop greenhouses, and the nation’s first demonstration kitchen that is also equipped for kids (you have to see it to believe it). The Market is Gold LEED-certified (also the first in the nation), and features a green roof, live walls, geothermal wells, rain gardens, and plenty of other innovative sustainable features. The Market serves as a focal point within the city, while revitalizing a previously neglected area. The Market continues to spark redevelopment of nearby properties while reintroducing community neighbors to a once underutilized Grand Rapids locale.

Gorgeous sunsets that paint the sky orange and purple and pink. But don't take our word for it: Condé Nast Traveler named the Lake Michigan shoreline one of the 25 best in the world. MTV ranks Oval Beach as one the five most beautiful in the U.S. Visitors who spend time on our lakeshore will tell you it's unlike any other place on Earth. All the more amazing: our beaches are just 30 minutes or so away from the bustling heart of Grand Rapids, a cosmopolitan city on the leading edge of art, culture, dining and entertainment.
