City Hall
Historisches Wahrzeichen

The City Hall in Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City is called by many names. The City Hall was called the Town Hall till 1954. In the brief span of time between 1954 and 1975 it was renamed the City Hall of Saigon. Since 1975 the building has been called the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Building. This charming cream and yellow French Colonial Building stands at the end of Nguyen Hue Boulevard on the Le Thanh Ton Street, Saigon. The construction of this building started in March 1898 and was completed in 1908. The building is said to be designed by the famous French architect P. Gardes’s whose design contributed to the main hall and the rectangular wings. On the top of the building is the famous bell tower which is placed on a pyramid like pedestal. The presence of bell towers is adapted from Renaissance architecture and is a feature that is common to most European town halls. Since this is a working government building, no one other than civil servants and cleaners are allowed in. Saigon's Town Hall’s distinct French colonial architecture reminds you of provincial French towns. Though it is not open to the public, tourists can see it from the outside, by day and it’s rumored to look fantastic at night. The statue outside of Ho chi Minh reading a book to a child is very popular with tourists. And yes, it does make for a great picture!

Ben Thanh Market
Shopping
5 mins
As one of the earliest surviving structures in Saigon, Ben Thanh Market is considered one of the symbols of present day Ho Chi Minh City. The market is popular with tourists seeking local handicrafts, ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress), souvenirs, and local cuisine. The market was formally established after the French took over the Gia Dinh Citadel in 1859. The market got its name Ben Thanh because at the beginning the market was located near a wharf (ben) of the Gia Dinh Citadel (thanh). In 1870 however, fire destroyed the market. The French rebuilt a new market with metal frames that became the largest market in Saigon. In 1912, the mayor of Saigon ordered the construction of a new market for the city in a marshy land called Le Maraise Boresse. This market was named New Ben Thanh Market. Ben Thanh Market was repaired in 1975 and underwent a major renovation ten years later in 1985, which expanded and updated the market. While many aspects of the market were changed in the renovation, the famous clock tower on the main entrance, which is a landmark symbol of HCMC, was left unchanged. It is a place where both foreigners and locals can find some of the best products the country produces. Foreign visitors can communicate in English with most of the shop-keepers. Several sellers can also speak French, Chinese, Japanese or Korean.Over the centuries of history and development, Ben Thanh Market remains one of the most prosperous commercial centers of Ho Chi Minh City.
