About us
Binbirdirek Cistern is the second-largest water reservoir in Istanbul after the Basilica Cistern. According to old Byzantine sources it was built during the time of Constantine (Constantinus) in the IV. century. Due to the drying up of Binbirdirek Cistern over time, this place has been used as a workshop since the 16th century. 224 of the columns 212 reached the present. The columns in the cistern consist of two bodies overlapped. There are capitals in the form of a truncated pyramid with no embroidery on top of the columns. It is known that the Greek letters embroidered on the column bodies are the signs of the stonemasons who worked in the construction of the cistern and carved the columns.
