La storia del Museo Städel:
Nel 1815, la fotografia, la macchina da scrivere e la bicicletta non erano ancora state inventate. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe scrisse una poesia sulla foglia di ginkgo come simbolo di amore e amicizia, e nel giardino botanico di Francoforte, il Palmengarten, fu piantato un faggio ramato che vi cresce ancora oggi. Fu sempre in quell'anno che il banchiere e commerciante di spezie Johann Friedrich Städel di Francoforte lasciò in eredità la sua casa in posizione centrale a Rossmarkt, la sua collezione d'arte e di libri e tutta la sua fortuna alla fondazione che porta il suo nome. Nel suo testamento stabilì che, con effetto immediato, lo «Städelsches Kunstinstitut» fosse aperto ai cittadini di Francoforte come museo e scuola d'arte, l'attuale Städelschule. Per il suo istituto d'arte voleva solo il meglio: le opere «mediocri» della sua collezione di circa 500 dipinti dovevano essere vendute per raccogliere fondi per quelle «migliori».
