Surrounded by stunning countryside and parkland, tradition, elegance and racing fever can be felt all over.
Three times a year, all eyes in the horse racing world are focused on Baden-Baden. The racing calendar starts with the Spring Meeting (May), followed by the Grand Festival Week (end of August/start of September) and rounded off by the Sales & Racing Festival (October).
Why don’t you also enjoy an unforgettable day at the races? – Top class cuisine, the unique buzz of the betting ring and racing that will bring everyone to their feet. Whether you join the crowds in the course enclosure, or attend a champagne party in a grandstand box, soak up the atmosphere and let the Baden-Baden race fever infect you!
Take a tip from us. Set your alarm clock a few hours earlier and savor the racecourse at the break of dawn, by attending the racecourse breakfast. Sitting on the club terrace, you will be able to watch the horses take their early morning exercise, while you can feast until your heart’s content. What a way to start the day!
Germany’s largest opera house is one of the finest addresses for classical music worldwide. The program inspires with such artists and ensembles as Anne Sophie Mutter, Anna Netrebko, and the Berliner Philharmoniker, which celebrates its Easter Festival here every year. Audiences can choose between opera, ballet, concerts, jazz performances, and musical shows. They come again and again, often becoming part of the Festival Hall's family of private sponsors. A solidarity of this kind is unique in Europe, but it comes as no surprise.
Firstly, the Festival Hall is deeply rooted in history: the architecture and music exude the spirit of the great composers and interpreters of the nineteenth century who enjoyed many happy stays in Baden-Baden – Johannes Brahms, Clara Schumann, and Richard Wagner are just a few of the many luminaries who spent time here.
Architecturally, the magnificent historic facade merges with a modern concert hall featuring some of the best acoustics in the world.
And the well-being of the guest is always paramount: the service team addresses each person’s individual needs, and the sophisticated in-house restaurant is regularly supervised by top chef Harald Wohlfahrt and inspired by his creations.
Did you know that it is possible to host events and hold meetings in the very same place where the world’s leading artists perform? Germany’s largest opera house raises its curtain and opens the doors to its rooms for small, select festivities – far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city.
When night falls in Baden-Baden, the Kurhaus with its elegant casino reveals its best side: radiant and full of life.
At the casino, ‘rien ne va plus’ (no more bets) only applies to gambling. Otherwise, the sky’s the limit here. The gambling options are both diverse and exotic, with roulette, blackjack, poker and punto banco awaiting you in the shimmering belle époque environment of the large gambling hall. However, if you prefer to gamble in a more intimate, almost private setting, then switch to the new Club Bernstein, where you can also play poker and roulette.
Casino Baden-Baden has managed to create an environment in which inspiration arises and can be further developed and applied as a basis for creativity and relaxation. And this is a proud tradition in Baden-Baden, as gambling has always been part of a large production here, boasting flair, splendour, style and charm – attributes which to this day still make Baden-Baden so attractive and unmistakable.
In the days of the belle époque, the international jet set flocked to Baden-Baden, including Russian state council members, English lords, plantation owners from Java, literary figures and composers from Paris and Moscow. Not much has changed since then. Well-known names from business, society and politics, stars and celebrities, ‘it girls’ and visitors from near and far have played their roles. To this day, Germany’s oldest casino is still one of the most popular destinations in Europe, a hot spot for the world’s high society and all of those who would like to be a part of it for a few unforgettable moments.
Shows and concerts, classical and rock, dance and party – every day at Casino Baden-Baden is a social highlight. In other words, the casino is the ultimate place to be for night owls. You get together, converse and delve into an unbelievably vibrant world, a lively mix of tradition, history and modernity – an extraordinary venue filled with opportunities.
The Romans discovered the healing properties of the twelve thermal springs and built the first thermal paths in Baden-Baden 2000 years ago.
800,000 litres of water a day spring up from a depth of 2,000 metres to the modern Caracalla Spa, offering visitors from around the world an exclusive spa experience. There are a range of pools at the Caracalla Spa, with temperatures between 18° C and 38° C, which are perfect for a nice long bathing session in the beneficial thermal waters.
As well as the attractive bathing pools, there is much more for visitors to enjoy in the extensive indoor area, including a rock grotto with hot and cold water, a relaxing aromatic steam bath, and a salt water inhalation room. In the large outdoor area there are two marble pools, a current channel, two whirlpools and a large grass sunbathing area with sun loungers. The outdoor pools are a special highlight in winter.
The extraordinary never stands alone, but is always embedded – in conversation – with its surroundings. Nature, art and architecture interact with each other here in a way you won’t experience anywhere else.
Baden-Baden - a fascinating town with a thousand faces that will undoubtedly bring a wide smile to yours. Discover the sights on a city tour with experienced guides or on a horse carriage ride through the streets of Baden-Baden.
Take a stroll along the impressive frontage of the Trinkhalle, Baden-Baden's Pump Room, with its Corinthian pillars and striking murals. Ever since Roman times, people have stood on this spot and enthused over Baden-Baden and the healing powers of its water.
The Trinkhalle (pump house) in the Kurhaus spa complex was built 1839–1842 by Heinrich Hübsch in a complementary architectural style as the spa's main building. The 90-metre arcade is lined with frescos and 16 Corinthian columns. If you stroll through the arcade you can see 14 mural paintings which show different scenes of the region.

Theatre Baden-Baden
The Paris-born casino manager, Edouard Bènazet, did a lot to promote Baden-Baden and the arts. The Parisian architect, Charles Dérchy, built one of the most beautiful theatre buildings in Germany in 1859-1862, in the style of the Paris Opera. Completely renovated in 1992, the building in the Goetheplatz can now seat 500 visitors, and it boasts the latest technology.
The theatre is managed by Director Nicola May, and it employs an 18-strong company of actors. Their repertoire includes modern versions of classics that remain faithful to the original text, modern works in German and English, and current works and premières. This historic backdrop offers the ensemble of actors three spaces to perform, including the large theatre hall. Events can also be hosted in the intimate mirrored foyer, which is a great space for theatre-goers during breaks, with its beautiful interior decoration, and is also excellent for hosting small, intimate pieces. The TIK, the stage for young theatre, can also be used.
A visit to Baden-Baden Theatre will encourage you to free your imagination and get to know historical characters. It is always a moving experience. The programme includes works from the psychological realist tradition. There are also side events, theatre classes and special events like the Baden-Württemberg Theatre Days.
"After 10 minutes you forget time, after 20 minutes the world" Where exactly? By an unforgettable visit to the Friedrichsbad!
Situated at the foot of the Altstadt, a combination of Roman and Irish bathing traditions have been enjoyed here for the past 140 years. And it’s not simply the baths that work wonders. Even the elaborate frescoes, that decorate the awe-inspiring central dome, provide a sensory treat for body and soul.
Let yourself be spellbound by the charm of the Friedrichsbad and revel in an atmosphere that has, for so many visitors, been a magical source of inspiration.
The view of the artistic frescos at the heart of the spa, on the round dome above the Roman/Irish baths, is a tonic for body and soul. When it was opened in 1877, this temple to well-being was among the most modern baths in Europe, and it is still as captivating as ever.
Experience sheer bathing bliss in an invigorating 17 step ritual. The changing temperatures and varying baths, with their precious thermal waters, guarantee a feeling of total relaxation. Make sure you opt for the soap & brush massage. It’s well worth it! After, you’ll feel like a new pin! Even the famous American novelist, Mark Twain, described his experience here in a letter to a friend: “Here at the Friedrichsbad you lose track of time within 10 minutes and track of the world within 20....”
The museum of collector Frieder Burda in Lichtentaler Allee is a sparkling jewel in Kurpark Baden-Baden. Designed by renowned New York celebrity architect Richard Meier, the museum architecture allows for plenty of natural light and is truly unique, much like the collection itself, which contains its fair share of masterpieces. Richard Meier is the man behind many renowned museum buildings, including the Museum of Applied Art in Frankfurt, the Getty Center in Los Angeles and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona. He compares this building to a "large villa", set like a "jewel in the park", in the Lichtentaler Allee in Baden-Baden.
The museum has a wonderfully transparent structure, making use of light and glass. The building was awarded the "New York Chapter Design Award" for its "excellent design and first-rate implementation". This masterful "daylight museum" stands right next to the Staatliche Kunsthalle, a gallery built over 100 years earlier. A state-run cultural institution is linked to a private cultural initiative here, which is a first in Germany.
The wide range of exhibitions in the new museum building is just as attractive as the architecture, with a variety of masterpieces by well-known classical modernist painters and pieces from the private collection of Frieder Burdas, including some great moments from the history of art.
With its roots in Expressionism, the collection now contains around 1,000 paintings, sculptures and works on paper, focussing on classical modernism. It features eight works by Picasso, giving an impressive view of his later work. What most fascinates the collector, Frieder Burda, about art is colour and the emotions that can be expressed through painting. This is a highly personal collection, which brings together exemplary works from the art of the 20th and 21st Centuries.
Be inspired by some modern and contemporary international art! The gallery, with its neoclassic façade, designed by architects Hermann Billing and Wilhelm Vittali, is situated in the wonderful park landscape of the Lichtentaler Allee. It houses no collection of its own, but exhibits visiting art exhibitions from all around the world. It serves as an ideal platform for artistic media of all kinds: a forum where paintings, sculptures, photographs and videos can express themselves to the full.
Museum of Ancient Bathing Culture
Even the Romans appreciated the relaxing effects of Baden-Baden's thermal spring water.
Now you can admire their masterwork by visiting the 2000 year old bath ruins, which are one of the countries oldest and best kept examples.
Experience at close range the sheer magnitude of their work and marvel at their achievement. Relive the ancient bathing culture at first hand, either by taking a guided tour, or by asking for a multi-lingual audio guide and viewing the ruins at your own pace. There is also a short computer animated film that should not be missed.
The museum is part of the cultural center LA8, which was opened in March 2009 by the GRENKE Foundation, in the historical estate on the "Museumsmeile", the Lichtentaler Allee. A new building has been added to the carefully restored main building, housing the 19th century Museum of Art and Technology of the most recent museological standard.
The museum - in its conception it is unique in the museum landscape of Germany - is dedicated to the intensive interaction of art and technology in the 19th century. Thematically interested in particular areas such as photography, the artistic and medical beautification of the human body, the romanticization and simultaneous industrialization of the Rhine, the strange juxtaposition of telepathy and telephony, but also the (re) discovery of Egypt in the 19th century or the park as green lung in the city - mentality history full of overlaps of art and technology. Many self-evident aspects of our everyday life go back to this ingenious century: in addition to photography and telephone the car, the railroad, the paper money, but also social "inventions" such as the nuclear family or compulsory education. In half-yearly changing theme exhibitions it becomes clear how up-to-date and how close the penultimate century is for us in many ways. The accompanying program to the exhibitions deepens with workshops for children, readings and lectures the living encounter with this century in which Humboldt and Napoleon, Marx and Rothschild, Nietzsche and Bismarck, Liebig and Daimler lived and worked.
The longest funicular railway in Germany is one of the attractions in Baden-Baden, and a popular destination for excursions. Climbing the highest point in Baden-Baden sounds rather strenuous. It need not be, however. The summit of the 2,191 foot Merkur Mountain can be easily reached with Europe’s steepest, and most technically advanced, funicular railway. In little over 5 minutes, and after negotiating inclines of between 23% and 54%, and a difference in altitude of 1,214 feet, you will have reached your target.
When the doors of the Merkur Mountain Railway close and the train starts moving, almost silently, you leave all the noise, stress and hustle and bustle of everyday life behind in the valley. If you don't fancy an exciting trip on the Merkur Mountain Railway, you can also go up along a wonderful footpath.
Once you arrive, there is a free lift up the Merkur Tower, to bring visitors up to the 23-meter viewing platform, so they reach a total height of 700m. There you can enjoy a fascinating panorama of the Baden-Baden basin, the highest mountains in the north of the Black Forest and the Murgtal valley, and you can even see as far as the Upper Rhine Plain, to Vogesen, Haardt and Odenwald. You have a view of the Hohenbaden and Alt-Eberstein ruins, mountains including the Battertfelsen, the Fremersberg, the Yburg, the Badener Höhe and the Hornisgrinde, and the cities of Karlsruhe and Strasbourg.
There is a pleasant restaurant at the summit, the "Merkurstüble", where you can enjoy a tasty bite to eat. There are signposted footpaths for walking and hiking, viewing points, wildlife reserves and much more for interesting excursions and amazing views. At the top of the Merkur Mountain there is also a barbecue station, an area of grass for sunbathing and a playground with a giant slide.
Another highlight for visitors to the Merkur mountain is the chance to take a relaxed tandem flight on a paraglider, to get a bird's eye view of Baden-Baden and the surrounding area.
Have you always wanted to know what it is like to live in paradise? Now you have the chance! Simply visit the Paradies in Baden-Baden and find out for yourself. This combined park and residential area, from the early 1920s, is often identified as being one of the country’s first “beautiful living” projects.
The ornamental garden stretches over three streets. It has a central feature of a cascading waterfall, which is supplied by an underground spring. From top to bottom, the waterfall descends an incredible 130 feet. The garden is aligned on both sides by exquisite mansions, which captivate and compensate with their own impressive shrubbery. From here, there is also a wonderful view of the town center.
The Paradies can be reached in a number of different ways: on foot; by car, with parking at the Friedrichshöhe reservoir or on the Markgrafenstraße; with the 205 bus, alighting at the Friedrichshöhe bus stop; or with the Road Train.
Geroldsauer Mühle is the gate to the Black Forest due in part to its geographical location, but also because it allows guests to experience the Black Forest in its purest form.
The inn with restaurant is one of the region’s largest buildings made of silver fir. The Geroldsauer Mühle restaurant with its three rooms is located in the left wing, whilst the outdoor area with its large beer garden offers plenty of space for a pleasant meal with a magnificent backdrop. Here you will find regional specialities and the hospitality so typical of Baden, whilst the Black Forest inn with open fireplace and traditional hunters’ lounge also offers space for parties for up to 150 people.
The right wing of the building offers regional and seasonal foods, whilst the mill market features a selection of regional and organic foods. You can watch the bakery right next door create baked goods using its own mill. The butcher’s also offers high-quality meats from select nature park businesses in the Black Forest.
The Central/North Black Forest Nature Park, one of Germany’s largest nature parks, as well as the Black Forest National Park and the town of Baden-Baden are represented on the second floor of the Geroldsauer Mühle building with a varied exhibition on the region’s attractions. Discover first-hand the Black Forest’s diverse landscape of nature and culture with interesting images of woodlands, fields and meadows – and a fascinating range of experiences.
Are you in need of a break, where you can contemplate and reflect? How about the peace and quiet of the Lichtenthal Abbey?
What is everyday life to the nuns of the Cistercian Abbey, will be for you a time for privacy and reflection.
The medieval abbey, situated at the end of Baden-Baden’s famous avenue, the Lichtentaler Allee, has a number of guestrooms available. While there, you will be most welcome to partake in the Holy Eucharist and Liturgy of the Hours. And if you wish, you will also be able to offer your help with house and garden chores and to speak to the nuns personally.
If your schedule doesn’t allow you a lengthier stay, you can still capture the atmosphere of the abbey, founded incidentally in 1245, by partaking in a guided tour, or by attending a church service or concert.
The vineyards near Baden-Baden have been offering wines of the highest quality for centuries, and monasteries and manors have made sure of that. And such a manor, the lower Schloß Neuweier, has brought the Bocksbeutel to Neuweier. As early as 1615, the two families of Elz and Knebel von Katzenellenbogen inherited the castle and goods of the Dalbergs in Neuweier.
The following lords of the castle promoted viticulture in the same way as the great ancestors. Since 1869, the Baden-Baden family August Rößler was in possession of the lower castle and its wineries. They made the situation Mauerberg a celebrity and of course also filled it in Bocksbeutel.
Rebland – the region’s name is a reference to the vineyards that flourish there, producing an intensive holiday feeling. Sloping vineyards that seem to go on forever, quaint villages with traditional, cosy restaurants, a nice meal with a glass of Baden wine, unadulterated indulgence in a sea of green – all that is just a five-minute drive from the bustling spa and shopping town of Baden-Baden.
In the truly magical, culinary triangle of three wine villages – Varnhalt, Steinbach with Umweg, and the state-approved resort town of Neuweier – which together form Baden-Baden’s Rebland, you can indulge, dine and enjoy to your heart’s content.
With 325 hectares of cultivated vineyard, it’s one of Germany’s three largest self-contained viticulture and wine enjoyment regions. Incidentally, 80 per cent of this space is dedicated to Riesling, the king of white wines, also referred to as ‘Klingelberger’. Whether you’re a discerning gourmet or a wine-sipping connoisseur, you’ll enjoy the elegant local wines and delectable cuisine served at all of Rebland’s many traditional inns, cosy lounges and premium restaurants.
The culinary wine tastings offered in the rustic cellars of Rebland’s famous wineries also offer a full-bodied flavour experience. And if it tickles your fancy, you can take these delectable wines home with you: Riesling, Pinot Noir, Blanc and Gris, sparkling wines and fruit brandies are available directly from the wine-grower. And if you’re looking for something truly exceptional, we recommend stopping by Baden-Badener Winzergenossenschaft in Neuweier, which is known for having one of the largest rarity cellars in Baden.
Old Castle Hohenbaden
For all castle fanatics amongst you, the Hohenbaden Castle, built in 1102, and known locally as the Altes Schloss (Old Castle), is an absolute must!
t was home to the Margraves of Baden from the 11th until the 15th century. Try tracing their steps around this fascinating ruin. Discover dark, secret dungeons and tackle the winding staircases all the way up to the lookout point. Your reward, once here, will be a magnificent view of Baden-Baden, the Black Forest and the Rhine Valley.

Battert Rock
The first Celtic settlers in Baden-Baden sought refuge from the Battert Rock. What today’s visitors seek, however, is the wonderful, undisturbed environment, which this nature reserve now offers. And although the Battert Rock lies within this protected sanctuary, walkers, hikers and climbers alike, who visit the area, certainly get their money’s worth: dense woodland, a jagged rock face, capped with a breathtaking panoramic view. And if the Oos valley just happens to be shrouded in a cloak of mist, you will be lucky enough to witness a fascinating natural spectacle.
Do you fancy getting your head above the clouds? Then why not try it on the Battert Rock and gaze across the low-lying carpet of mist to the slopes of the Black Forest. Although on clear days, you won’t be able to witness this fascinating contrast, you will still be blessed with an absolutely fabulous view.
Even climbers are most welcome to this craggy igneous outcrop, where tempting routes, for beginners and advanced climbers, are ready to put you to the test. Here you can practice almost all climbing techniques, on the numerous walls, cracks, roofs and chimneys that the rock face has to offer. If you are a climbing novice, but have the urge to experience the thrill of climbing, then why not reserve a place on a course? Regardless of whether you are new to the sport, or an avid climber, there is something for everybody, even for children.

Black Forest National Park
Walking in the wilds! The Black Forest National Park – get to know Baden-Württemberg’s wild side
January 1st 2014 marked not only the beginning of the year but also the scheduled start of the Black Forest National Park – the first, and only one of its kind, in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Serving as a gateway to the park, due to its excellent scenic setting, is the international spa and culture-rich town of Baden-Baden, providing, as a result, a perfect starting point for excursions and tours for those seeking a unique experience with nature.
Reaching the stunning natural surrounds only takes a matter of minutes by car via the world-famous Black Forest Scenic Route (Schwarzwaldhochstrasse). It starts in Baden-Baden and boasts wonderful views across the Rhine valley to the Vosges mountain range. Parking is available at the Plättig car park; bus number 245 to the Mummelsee lake also stops here. With its new offers for holidaymakers and residents, the Black Forest National Park represents a major gain for the region. From theme-related guided walks and adventure tours to numerous informative events, a wide range of all-year-round offers are now available to interest people of all ages.
Located just off Schwarzwaldhochstrasse (B500) between Ruhestein and Unterstmatt, Mummelsee is just the right excursion for sunny spring and summer days. Incidentally, Mummelsee is one of the seven remaining cirque lakes in the Black Forest, which originated during the last ice age. With a circumference of 800 m, a depth of 17 m and an elevation of 1,036 m, Mummelsee is the largest, deepest and highest of the seven cirque lakes.
According to legend, when you see the Mummelsee lake at an altitude of 1,036 metres in the daylight, you’d never suspect what actually goes on here at night under the light of the full moon. Whilst during the day pedalos peacefully skim the surface of the water and visitors stroll through the attractive landscape, the famous Mummelsee King and his mermaids come out to play in the moonlight at night.
Mummelsee owes its name to the white water lily, called ‘Mummeln’ in the local dialect, which was once widespread here. You can still experience the eternal silence in the evening, in the night and in the morning. The rest of the time, lots of people flock to the lake.
Berghotel Mummelsee was built on the shores of Mummelsee a hundred years ago and, up until just after World War I, could only be accessed by foot. With the construction of the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse in 1930, the famous lake with its cosy mountain hotel developed into one of the Black Forest’s most popular tourist destinations.
Today, a visit to Mummelsee offers a whole host of experiences and attractions. In addition to enjoying the scenic attractions and stunning, idyllic landscape surrounding the lake, you can also hire pedalos, marvel at works of art by modern artists along an art trail, or take a short hike to the nearby Hornisgrinde summit. An accessible path round the lake also offers people with limited mobility and families with pushchairs the opportunity to go for a stroll. Along the way, you’ll come across the beautiful mermaid in bronze and her song of love. You can find information below.
How about doing something that you have never done before? Like venturing out at sunrise and floating over Baden-Baden and the Black Forest in a hot air balloon. Doesn’t that sound fantastic? Fanned by a gentle breeze you will be sailing with Europe’s largest hot air balloon fleet – a flying experience that you won’t forget in a hurry.
