Additional details
In November 2014 the new HOTEL ZOO BERLIN reopened after an extensive renovation lasting two years. Guests entering the new hotel are greeted by a magnificent jade green carpet designed by Diane von Fuerstenberg, decorated with crawling leopards that escort them discreetly to the hovering reception desk. The ceiling of this catwalk is decorated with impressive fantasy molding ornaments and the sleek reception desk is imbedded into the old stonework of the original building. Right aside the desk, the space opens up into the new hotel living room, stretching upwards more than 7 meters, with industrial full-length windows and an open fireplace blazing five meters wide in the center. The room subtly cavorts with proportions; combines light and darkness with ease and plays with colors that please the eye; an affable mix of various rich hues of violet, velvet and leather artfully combined with modern carpets. An oversized door across the fireplace is reminiscent of a scene straight out of Alice in Wonderland. With great passion for details, the American Interior Designer Dayna Lee (N.Y. and L.A.) transformed the glamour of days past into a modern New York townhouse. Every one of the 144 rooms and suites in this landmarked building are individually designed and none resemble one another. The building was originally constructed in 1891, as a private residence by Alfred Messel, the architect of the Pergamon museum. The hotel is now owned by Manfred Weingartner and Robert Huebner. Old iron beams and brick-lined walls from 1891 were laid open during the renovation and integrated into the new design. The art department of the renowned Babelsberg film studios was entrusted with the restoration process. The enclosing of the former courtyard was seamlessly integrated into the architecture of the historical building complex and is home to the 250 square meter living room spanning two entire floors, which is considered the centerpiece of the hotel. The renovation also included a 200 square meter extension to the rear building, now accommodating the GRACE restaurant, which has quickly become one of the hot spots of Berlin’s restaurant scene. The backside of the living room is adjoined by an open winter garden, from where the five meter open fireplace can also be enjoyed. Adjacent to the winter garden lies the GRACE bar, Berlin’s newest hot spot.
