Stephen Avenue is a major pedestrian mall in downtown Calgary. The street is known for some of Calgary's finest restaurants, cafés, pubs and bars. The street also provides an eclectic mix of boutiques and high-end retail. Major shopping centres include The Core Shopping Centre, (formerly Calgary Eaton Centre/TD Square), Bankers Hall, Fashion Central, Scotia Centre, and The Bay department store. The street was named after George Stephen, 1st Baron Mount Stephen, the first president of the Canadian Pacific Railway.[1] Stephen Avenue contains a high concentration of registered historic buildings and the street itself was declared a Canadian historic site in 2002.[2] Many of these building are made of sandstone that was quarried locally from the Paskapoo Formation; a result of the construction of fire-resistant buildings following a fire in 1886 that damaged many of the city's earlier wooden structures.

Peace Bridge is a bridge that accommodates people walking and cycling across the Bow River in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The bridge, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, opened for use on March 24, 2012. It has the popular nickname "Finger Trap Bridge" due to its visual similarity to the finger trap puzzle.[1] The bridge was built by The City of Calgary to connect the southern Bow River pathway and Downtown Calgary with the northern Bow River pathway and the community of Sunnyside. This connection was designed to accommodate the increasing number of people commuting to and from work and those utilizing Calgary's pathways. The bridge is reportedly used by 6000 people a day and has ranked among the top 10 architectural projects in 2012 and among the top 10 public spaces of 2012

Prince's Island Park is a beautiful highly used park in downtown Calgary that holds many large events throughout the year including the Canada Day celebration and Calgary Folk Festival. Prince's Island was named after Peter Anthony Prince, a lumberman from Quebec who came to Calgary in 1886 and founded the Eau Claire Lumber Mill. The Eau Claire and Bow River Lumber Company dug a channel (now the lagoon) to get logs from Kananaskis closer to the Calgary sawmill, resulting in an island. In 1889 Prince formed the Calgary Water Power Company to supply electric streetlights to the town. Despite its name, the company used steam generators powered by sawdust until 1893 when Prince built Calgary's first hydro-electric plant near the east end of the lagoon. After his death in 1925 the mill was still operational until 1944. The land was purchased by The City from the remaining Prince family in 1947 for development of park land.

Central Memorial Park (also known as Memorial Park) is Calgary’s oldest park and is located in the heart of the Beltline. Remembrance Day ceremonies are held here annually on November 11. In 1899, William Pearce convinced the Federal Government to donate land for the park and by 1912 the park was complete and considered a civic showcase. The grounds were modeled after a formal Victorian garden featuring geometric pathways, elaborate garden beds, and rows of imported and native trees. The statue in front of the Memorial Park Library was erected in 1924 by the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire to honour the soldiers who fought in WWI. The equestrian statue was erected as a tribute to all Albertans who fought in the Second Boer War.

Long before Fort Calgary was built, people have been gathering at this place to share stories, create community, and build futures. When you come to Fort Calgary, you stand on the traditional territory of the peoples of Treaty 7, including Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai Nations of the Blackfoot Confederacy; the Tsuutina; and the Bearspaw, Chiniki, and Wesley Nations of the Stoney-Nakoda. This is also where the North West Mounted Police arrived in 1875 and built Fort Calgary, which became the foundation for the city of Calgary. In just under 150 years, Calgary grew from tiny outpost to a city where 1.25 million people now live. This place is significant. The confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers represent our story as a place to gather, meet and connect not only our history, but to our earth, each other, and ourselves. It is where the past meets the present. It is where we tell the stories of the people who have shaped us. Here, we take time to reflect on our past, understand our present, and create our future. We offer a museum, public education, school programs and special events. We also offer an outstanding dining, catering and event venue. Be a part of Calgary’s history.

While preparing for the next phases of renovations, Contemporary Calgary is pleased to welcome the community back and into their new home at the Centennial Planetarium. Operating under a new programming initiative, Temporary Contemporary, they are pleased to present Brutal Visions, an exhibition acknowledging their iconic Brutalist building, its vital role as a science centre and planetarium, and its existing transformation into Canada’s newest modern and contemporary art gallery. Running concurrently, Clemens Gritl’s A Future City from the Past displays large-scale architectural photographs which mine the aesthetics and ideologies of the past to adopt a critically optimistic lens in imagining our future. At the core of their programming, Contemporary Calgary has launched Collider – an open studio artist residency with over 30 artists from the City working onsite and in a highly collaborative environment. Collider is an unparalleled opportunity to build diverse and robust relationships, produce and exhibit new work, and develop an extensive series of public programs.
