Towering over Petchburi and reached by cable car or tough hike up a steep path is Pra Nakhon Khiri ("Holy City Mountain"), a 19th-century neoclassical palace constructed in a delightful mixture of Siamese style and chinoiserie by King Mongkut. The palace comprises a group of pra Hii nang (throne halls) constructed in different styles. Views are outstanding from several of the buildings, including the astronomical observation tower constructed in 1862 by King Rama IV. The TAT and local authorities sponsor an annual sound-and-light show on the hill every year in early February. Pra Nakhon Khiri has been declared a national historic park.
