Lucena is situated in the centre of Andalusia, in the south of the province of Cordoba in the heart of the mountain area known as the Subbetica. Surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, Lucena is a dynamic town which welcomes visitors. Its rich historical heritage is steeped in its essential Jewish, Arab and Christian past. The Cordoban baroque period reaches its maximum expression inside the impressive San Mateo Sanctuary. It is considered to be the genuine ‘Subbetica Cathedral.’ A full visit to Baroque Lucena - the cultural heart of the Subbetica region, should include a visit to the palace of the Condes of Santa Ana with the town’s visitor centre, as well as the chapels of San Juan Bautista, San Martín and the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Araceli.
