Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is one of the most iconic landmarks in Oman, located in the capital city, Muscat. Here are some key details about the mosque: Visiting the Mosque - The mosque is open to non-Muslim visitors from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM (Sunday to Thursday). - Visitors are expected to dress modestly, with women covering their heads, arms, and legs. - Photography is allowed, but respectful behavior is required. History and Construction Commissioned by Sultan Qaboos bin Said in 1992. The construction took six years and was completed in 2001. It was built to celebrate Oman’s Islamic heritage and provide a grand place of worship for the people. Architecture and Design The mosque showcases a blend of Islamic, Persian, and Omani architectural styles. The main prayer hall can accommodate over 6,500 worshippers, while the entire mosque complex can host up to 20,000 people. It features a 56-meter-tall dome and a 90-meter-high minaret, making it one of the tallest structures in Oman. The mosque is made of Indian sandstone, giving it a distinctive warm color. Notable Features Chandelier: The mosque houses one of the largest chandeliers in the world, made in Germany, adorned with Swarovski crystals. It weighs about 8.5 tons and is 14 meters tall. Carpet: The prayer hall has a single-piece Persian carpet that is one of the largest handwoven carpets in the world. It was made in Iran by 600 weavers and took four years to complete. The carpet measures 70 × 60 meters and weighs 21 tons. Calligraphy and Decor: The mosque is adorned with beautiful Quranic inscriptions and intricate tilework. The ceilings and walls display Islamic geometric patterns and calligraphy.
