1622年から1638年にかけて建てられたギア要塞は、マカオの最高地点であるギアヒルの頂上にあります。マカオを海からの攻撃から守るために設計されましたが、街全体を見渡せる位置にあるため、監視所としての価値が高まっています。もともとは兵舎、貯水槽、弾薬や装備品店、司令官の家、ギアの聖母に捧げられた礼拝堂などがありました。現在、この要塞で最も目立つのは、1864年に建てられた、中国沿岸で最も古い灯台です。高さは15メートルで、晴れた日には約20マイル先まで灯りが見えます。灯台の近くには聖母マリアの像、数枚のアンティークの写真、1622年に礼拝堂が建設されたときの絵画の痕跡が収められている礼拝堂があります。また、近くには台風の接近を知らせる信号が掲げられている支柱があります。以前、チャペルの鐘楼から暴風雨警報が発令されていました。
