キリスト王記念碑を建てるというアイデアが浮かんだのは、1934年、故リスボン総主教であったマヌエル・ゴンサルベス・セレヘイラ陛下がブラジルを訪問していたときです。リオデジャネイロを旅していると、コルコバードにある救世主キリスト像の印象的な場所に出会い、すぐにリスボンの前に似たようなものを建てたいという思いが心に芽生えました。そこで、1936年、キリスト王記念碑を建てるというアイデアが祈りの使徒たちに知らされ、熱心に歓迎されました。この記念碑が国家のものとなるためには、すべてのポルトガル司教の承認と協力が必要でした。この記念碑はついに取得され、1937年の四旬節司教共同司教書簡で公式に公開されました。
