Missouri Theatre

The Missouri Theatre is mid-Missouri’s only pre-Depression era movie palace/vaudeville stage and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Built in 1928, the theatre’s interior is an ornate baroque and rococo style of the Louis XIV and XV periods. Designed by the Boller Brothers Architects of Kansas City, the theatre is modeled after the Paris Opera House. Much of the original detailing survives, including the Belgian marble wainscoting, plaster reliefs, stained glass art panels under the balcony, and an 1,800-pound Italian chandelier featuring crystal prisms and etched panels.

The Museum of Art and Archaeology is the art museum of the University of Missouri-Columbia.
The Museum of Art and Archaeology was founded in 1957 as the Study Collections for Art History and Archaeology. In 1961 it became the Museum of Art and Archaeology. In that year fourteen Old Master paintings from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation were given to the university, and the first gallery of the museum was opened in the university library building. In 1976 the collections became generally accessible when the museum moved to Pickard Hall, named in honor of Professor John Pickard. Pickard, who trained in Germany, was the first chair of the university’s Department of Art History and Archaeology, founded in 1891. Together with Professor Walter Miller, an archaeologist and first dean of the university’s Graduate School, Pickard immediately began collecting original works of art, as well as materials for teaching—slides, photographs, oil copies of famous paintings, and a collection of plaster casts of famous sculptures (Cast Gallery). The whole collection was named the Museum of Classical Archaeology and History of Art. Over one hundred and fifty works of art from those early years are still part of the Museum of Art and Archaeology’s collection.
During the depression years, the Museum of Classical Archaeology and Art ceased to exist, as did the Department of Art History and Archaeology, but with the appointment of Professor Saul S. Weinberg to the Department of Classics in 1948 and of Professor Homer L. Thomas to the Art Department in 1950, the decision was made to reestablish the Department of Art History and Archaeology, which led to the creation of the Study Collections in 1957.
In 1967, the tenth anniversary of the museum, Muse, Annual of the Museum of Art and Archaeology, was inaugurated. Muse publishes articles on works in the collection, reports on museum activities, and has in the past included reports on excavations supported by the museum. The annual listing of acquisitions in Muserecords the growth of the collection.
With the move to Pickard Hall in 1976 the museum began to play a more significant role in the community. A friends’ group, Museum Associates, was founded at the time of the opening and has played a significant role in supporting the museum’s activities and acquisitions throughout the years.

The theater opens for seating 30 minutes before showtime (or as soon as it’s cleaned and ready from the previous showtime). To assure that everyone in your party can find seats together, it’s advisable to arrive at this time, so make sure you allow plenty of time for parking, which can be a little tricky (especially on the weekends). We recommend the city parking garage at Hitt and Cherry, just ½ block away. Parking there is free on weekends and after 6pm on weekdays.
In addition to tickets, the box office sells gift cards in any denomination and Ragtag memberships. The box office also sells Ragtag tote bags and t-shirts, as well as a small selection of True/False items.

J.W. "Blind" Boone Home

John W. “Blind” Boone overcame blindness, poverty, and discrimination to become a nationally famous concert pianist and composer. Boone helped to merge African-American folk music with the European classical tradition, a fusion that opened the way for ragtime, jazz, boogie-woogie, and much more.
Eugenia Lange and John William Boone first met when Boone came to Columbia to perform in the Christmas concerts of 1879. A decade later, their friendship had ripened into romance and then marriage. And marriage, for the successful man Boone had become, signaled the need for a proper home. Their house was built by Eugenia’s brother, John, who was also Boone’s manager. The land on which it sits once belonged to her father, John Batiste Lang, a “free man of color” who came to Columbia in 1850 to be close to his enslaved family.
Eugenia presumably took the lead in furnishing the house with chandeliers, fine carpets, patterned wallpaper and colorful photos on the walls. John William began to accumulate pianos – at one point he kept seven of them scattered around the house.
By the time John William died in 1927, their troubled financial situation must have made it difficult to maintain the house. A few days after Eugenia died in 1931, a newspaper reporter crossed the threshold and stood among “faded scarlet carpets, scarred light oak furniture and tarnished gilt frames on large bright-colored pictures…all that remain to show the former glory.”
The Boone Home, located at 10 North 4th St, is one of the few physical remnants of the community African-Americans built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It serves as a monument to the individual genius and generosity of John William “Blind” Boone, but it also represents the historic black community as a whole – its struggles and accomplishments.
The restoration of Boone’s home is a tribute to the residents of Columbia, music lovers everywhere, and the African-American community. The heritage of this inspirational and talented man who lived and created many of his compositions in his home on 4th Street is a vital and important element in the history of our community. Revitalization of the home and the gardens brings a resurgence of community pride in the heritage of yesterday and excitement about the future of Columbia.

MKT Nature and Fitness Trail

The MKT Trail is Columbia’s premier multi-use trail. This 10-foot wide trail built on the old railbed of the MKT railroad begins in downtown Columbia in Flat Branch Park at 4th and Cherry Streets and ends at the State of Missouri’s Katy Trail State Park near McBaine. The distance from the start of the MKT Trail to the Katy Trail is 8.9 miles. The Katy Trail extends for 240 miles from St. Charles in eastern Missouri to Sedalia in western Missouri. The MKT Trail’s all-weather crushed limestone surface provides opportunities for walking, running, and cycling.
The Forum Nature Area Trail winds through 108 acres including a small demonstration wetland habitat. It reconnects to the MKT Trail near Twin Lakes Recreation Area.
Thanks to funding support from the Park Sales Tax, trail users can travel the MKT Trail all the way to the Katy Trail without crossing a street. The trail was routed under Stewart, Providence, and Elm Streets as part of a capital improvement project completed in 2007. The year-round restrooms that the replaced port-a-pots at Forum and Scott Blvd. accesses were installed in 2008 and were also funded by the Park Sales Tax.

Rose Music Hall’s story starts back in 1999 when then Blue Note owner Richard King expanded his business and purchased the venue formerly known as Mojos, located just a few blocks from the historic theater-turned-music-venue.
After 34 years, King sold The Blue Note and Mojos to Matt Gerding and Scott Leslie. The pair came armed with a promise to continue King’s legacy of bringing great live music to Columbia and to expand the culture even more. Our owner Maury Allen’s fifth great grandfather, Isham Allen, owned and operated the Six-Mile Ordinary over 200 years ago in Virginia. On July 1, 1774, free holders congregated there and drafted the James City Resolves not to import British goods. Two years later, the same group gathered again to declare their support for American independence. Six-Mile Ordinary even served as a place where Col. James Innes and his troops retreated when hundreds of British infantrymen came ashore on April 21, 1781. Isham eventually left his ordinary to join the revolution.
Our Columbia, MO distillery pays homage to the iconic ordinary that served as a refuge for early Americans. We pay tribute to a family business that originated near the dawn of our nation, and is steeped in rich history, while also looking to the future.

The City of Columbia has a robust recycling program. Containers such as glass bottles and jars, aluminum and steel cans and rigid plastics — plastics you cannot wrap around your fingers — can be recycled in Columbia. Black and dark plastics cannot be accepted at our facility. To ensure glass is recycled, please use the purple glass-only bin at the State Farm Parkway recycling drop-off center. Containers should be lightly rinsed. Boxes should be flattened. It is not necessary to remove staples, address windows or packing tape from the fibers, but customers should remove plastic wraps and liners.
