In the 1990s, the Government of the Cayman Islands purchased Pedro St. James and painstakingly restored the Great House to the splendor of its 18th century heritage. The Mastic, a deep forest trail located 50 minutes from the resort, is well worth the drive. The Mastic is one of the few remaining areas of untouched forests in Cayman. Visitors also have the opportunity to come in contact with Cuban tree frogs, hermit crabs, lizards and geckos, nine species of bats, six species of butterflies and even a snake or two, but no worries, there are no poisonous snakes in Cayman. See the national tree and flower, the silver thatch palm and the wild banana orchid.
