織物の貿易は、1313年にはすでにハッセルト市の柱の1つでした。1383年、織物職人が故郷の政治的動揺によりルーヴェンからハッセルトに移住したとき、繊維産業はさらに重要になりました。当時、ハッセルトは布の街として有名でした。その理由の1つは、大量の羊毛が購入されたケンペン地区の近くだったことです。ハッセルトの布は、その優れた品質ときれいな仕上がりで賞賛されました。リエージュ、ナミュール、アントワープ、アムステルダム、ゴルクム、ケルン、フランクフルト、リューベックで販売されました。布産業はハッセルトにとって経済的および社会的に非常に重要でした。15世紀には、人口の5分の1が布産業で働いて毎日パンを稼いでいました。1536年には、この都市には約200人の布織りの達人がいました。それでも、「laeckenmeikers」、マスターウィーバー、ウィーバーボーイの職業は、メンバーの数と重要性において他のすべての職業を上回っていました。 ハッセルトは長い間、地域の貿易の中心地でしたが、第二次世界大戦以来、ファッションとテキスタイルのビジネスは都市の規模をはるかに超える形で繁栄してきました。スタイリッシュな服、高級アクセサリー、その他のファッションアイテムは、フランダース、ワロン州、オランダ、ドイツから数え切れないほどの頻繁に買い物客を魅了しました。 ファッション・ミュージアムの設立もその一例だ。一方では、社会やクリエイティブの歴史の一部を説明することができ、他方では、現在そして将来、ファッションで活躍したいと願う人々にインスピレーションを与えることができます。 ファッションミュージアムは1987年末に活動を開始し、1989年に訪問者に門戸を開きました。抜本的な修復と設計作業により数年間（1993年から95年）休館した後、1995年9月2日、博物館は改装された宿泊施設で常設公開されました。
