アヤソフィア教会はテオドシウス皇帝の治世中に建てられ、ユスティニアヌス帝の治世中の西暦532年のニカの反乱の火事で全焼しました。同年、ユスティニアヌス帝は、現在見られるような新しい大聖堂の建設を命じ、わずか5年後の西暦537年に一般公開されました。この新しい大聖堂の建築家は、ミレトス（ソーケ）のイシドロスとトラレス（アイディン）のアンテミオスでした。大聖堂は、高さ55.60m、直径30.80〜31.88mの壮大なドームで覆われ、40本のフレーム材と107本の柱が使われていました。
