Offering beautiful mosaics and towering marble columns, visit the State Capitol to experience the rich history of Wisconsin's diverse ethnic heritage on a free guided tour, or explore on your own.
Where else can you see more than 650 animals from around the world for free? Henry Vilas Zoo has been one of visitors' favorite things to do in Madison for decades. Indoor exhibits like the aviary and primate building let you get up-close to some of the world's most amazing animals. The conservation carousel amazes all. And the polar bears are always putting on a show. Henry Vilas Zoo is one of only a few remaining free zoos in North America.
The iconic State Street, which became a pedestrian mall in the 1970s, leads all the way from the Wisconsin State Capitol Building to the University of Wisconsin campus. It's known for its lively atmosphere, diverse shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. Throughout the seasons, pop-ups, live music and art can be enjoyed both indoors and outdoors.
Madison Children's Museum

With one-of-a-kind interactive exhibits, daily activities and year-round special events for both kids and adults, there's always something to do at the Madison Children's Museum. This unique venue has also been transformed to host events like the Association of Children's Museums Conference.
Housed in a soaring, Cesar Pelli designed building, the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) provides free exhibitions that engage people in modern and contemporary art. Four galleries offer changing exhibitions that feature established and emerging artists. A rooftop sculpture garden provides a respite with inspiring views. Admission is free.
Experience internationally-acclaimed performances including opera, musicals, dance, and family entertainment. With over 200 performances, art exhibitions, and educational and community events each year, Overture also offers a variety of venues for meetings, conventions, and special events.
The Chazen presents collections that range from ancient times to the present day, as well as temporary exhibitions, tours and cultural events. Special event space is also available. Admission is free.
At Olbrich, take in 14 outdoor gardens within the grounds, including the Rose Garden, the Herb Garden, the Meadow Garden and Serenity Garden. The Thai Pavilion and Garden is one of just four such pavilions to exist outside of Thailand. It contains gold-leaf etchings and, spanning 40 feet long, it was assembled with no nails or screws. Enjoy the Bolz Conservatory, an indoor tropical paradise featuring exotic plants, flowers, birds and fish. Free tram rides are available for guests who would like a guided, non-walking tour. Events, concerts and classes offered. Open daily, year-round.
Madison Boats and Edgewater have partnered to offer an incredible experience exploring Lake Mendota. This captained excursion leaves from the Edgewater Pier. You will embark on a plush 24' Harris pontoon boat that comfortably sits ten and is driven by a Madison Boats staff. The Edgewater has curated a special menu to meet all your needs, from sweets to snacks, dinner and drinks.
Betty Lou Cruises offer group charters and public cruises on Lake Mendota and Lake Monona April through October. Lake Monona cruises depart one block from Monona Terrace Convention Center. Captain and crew guide you along while you enjoy buffet food and beverage service.
Historic limestone winery known for its distinctive wines. Situated on southern slopes, the vineyards overlook the Wisconsin River. Winery store, guided tours and tastings daily. Open year-round. Located 25 miles northwest of Madison.
